A sigh slips from her lips as she began to pace around the room, one hand on her hip as the other scratched her head, ruffling her blonde locks that used to be fixed in a regal manner. Alys would be so mad after all the hard work she did with my hair, Claudia thought but she quickly pushed that thought away. Thinking about that kind of nonsense was ludicrous and irrational when you’re asked to pick between two people who helped you become what you are today.

John Arlex, the Warden of Incarceron. Her adoptive father who stole her from the Prison— that Hell— and brought her up to become the crown queen of the Realm. Had he not taken her, she wouldn’t be wearing silk gowns, have many maids nor many pets. But alas, look how she ended up; the ends of her gown were tattered, the Realm but a squalor, and her whole home a wreck. All that was left that he gave to her was intelligence and power.

But Jared. Master Sapiens, one of the best the Academy had … he taught her about the stars, the kings, history, Incarceron. He gave her knowledge about their world and this Era. But most of all, he taught her how to care and love. He taught her to how to hope, dream, fight, care, and love.

Hope to be free. Dream about the future. Fight for what was right. Care for people. Love your precious ones.

John Arlex made her a queen. Jared Sapiens made her a human.

And unlike Queen Sia who was cold, cunning and smart, Claudia hoped, fought, and cared in the end. Didn’t she when she hoped for something better other than marrying Caspar? When she fought for her home? Defended it? When she tore that wedding dress? When she panicked and searched in vain for Jared when she learned he was missing?

Claudia would be a queen, yes, but not like Sia who was without a soul. Humans had a soul. Claudia had one.

And in the end, a soul weighs more than intelligence and power.

What more, someone you’ve spent  a lot more time with was much more than someone who was only there when they had visitors of when there was a celebration. Jared was always there for her, since she was five.

A smile crosses her face for a split second before it vanishes as a single word escapes her lips.

BEYOND THE third landing the stairs were cluttered with bird droppings. They were certainly real. She picked her way through, groped along the corridor to the bend, climbed another three steps, and came to the iron-barred door. Grasping the ring, she turned it softly and peered in. "Jared? It's me."

    The room was dark. A solitary candle burned on the sill, its flame guttering in the draft. All around the turret, the windows had been rolled back, in a disregard of protocol that would have given Ralph kittens.

    The observatory roof rose on steel beams so narrow, it appeared to float. A great telescope had been wheeled to face the south; it bristled with finderscopes and infrared readers and a small flickering monitor screen. Claudia shook her head. "Look at this! If the Queen's spy sees this, the fines will cripple us."

NOTHING HAPPENED but a white light. When Claudia opened her eyes, they stung; her sight was watery, and small dark spots floated there for a minute, dimming the walls of the cell.

    It was certainly a cell. It stank. The smell was so strong, she retched and then tried not to breathe again, the reek of damp and urine and rotting bodies and straw.

    The straw was all around her; she was sitting in it, and a flea jumped out of it into her hand. With a hiss of discuss she jumped up and shook it off, shivering and scratching.

    So this was Incarceron.

    It was just as she'd expected.
