Started wrapping some things up tonight! The handles on my casserole started drying too quickly so I brushed the seams with a ceramic glue and then waxed the handles and the knob to try to slow the drying on them to match the body. Then I pulled some handles and trimmed up my new swirled tests. Bowls went on the rack and I’ll put the handles on the mugs this Saturday.

currently thinking about all the incense holders i wanna make!
Love Matthew Metz’s work. I came to this year’s St Croix Valley Pottery Tour looking to buy one of his beer stein mugs. Last year, I put one down and lamented not buying it. But he didn’t have any available! It’s okay — I’ll check next year. Metz is holding a new style of mug he’s been making lately — note the round circular carvings in the background of the design. It’s just lovely.

This appears to be a Jian ware/Tenmoku bowl.
From the Wikipedia “It is made of feldspar, limestone, and iron oxide. The more quickly a piece is cooled, the blacker the glaze will be.
Tenmokus are known for their variability. During their heating and cooling, several factors influence the formation of iron crystals within the glaze. A long firing process and a clay body which is also heavily colored with iron increase the opportunity for iron from the clay to be drawn into the glaze. While the glaze is molten, iron can migrate within the glaze to form surface crystals, as in the “oil spot” glaze, or remain in solution deeper within the glaze for a rich glossy color.”
I’d love to see the original video.

Some fantastic luck tonight! Somehow, somewhere, the clay gods listened to my begging and I was able to get the lid of my casserole to fit into the body again. So I cleaned up the lid a smidge, left it on the pot, stuck on my handles, and drew in where I wanted the matching design to be. Then I took the time to do some more iron oxide brushwork on my new bowl and did some test glazing. I won’t make it into the studio this weekend so I’m hoping all will go well.
Got my test cups back and I completely forgot to smooth the dots out! I’ll have to take some sandpaper to them because they are dangerously pointy and will only get sharper when glazed.
Knobs! These were my rejects that I threw for my casserole. I don’t check the evenness of my walls as much as I should so I took the opportunity to chop these in half. Not bad, but there’s always room for improvement!
I also took most of my time to trim 2/3 of the pots my young dudes made last Saturday.
Today I had a crash course on wheel throwing with two teens and a 9 year old! They all did really well for their first time. I’ve got some pieces to get ready for glazing now…
