Which it is, because on the one hand, yes, we do have a history of our government throwing flashy baubles at the world to boost Goodwill while committing atrocities. And no matter when something like this is planned, it's always going to have that element despite also being in genuine scientific research, because. Well. Our government is pretty much always committing atrocities. I would be naïve and incredibly self-centered not to acknowledge all of this

By the same token, though, this mission very much went forward in spite of the current administration rather than because of it, no matter what they're trying to say now. It would take a harder heart than mine to not see wins for the arts, humanities, and sciences in the US right now as a small but real blow against Trump and people like him. Even though I know it's partially propaganda for the international stage, it's difficult not to be happy on some level about the bright moments in all of this darkness

Additionally, there was some international collaboration involved here – the project was through NASA, but it also involved the first non-American to circle the moon (one of two Canadians involved in the mission)

Does either of these things negate the propaganda element? No. The space program is as heavily publicized as it is as much to make the US look good as for the cool scientific content and the human cooperation element. Obviously. But again, what I said was that it's complicated. Not that it's all one thing or all the other
