Daughter of a mountain-god, Konohana Sakuya is the flower goddess who, in some ways, represents the entire Japanese ideal of life. Her symbol is the sakura, a flower that blooms brilliantly and dies ignominiously within three days, and an enduring Japanese metaphor for fleeting human life. When her husband, the sea-god Ninigi, once doubted her fidelity toward him, she locked herself in a hut and set it ablaze, swearing her children would only be able to survive if they were truly Ninigi's own.
