CNN’s Andy Cohen, alongside Anderson Cooper, asked Dave Chappelle a loaded question timed to America’s 250th: why is he proud to be an American, and how does he view the country today?

Chappelle didn’t dodge, but he made the media squirm first: “𝘉𝘰𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝘕𝘰𝘸 𝘐 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘱 𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘺’𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦.”

He described spotting a fellow American overseas and trading what he called the 𝐅𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛 look — recognition of a shared, chaotic national identity nobody else quite understands.

Even a comedian with zero incentive to defend Trump could feel, in real time, what years of loaded gotcha questions do to a public figure. That’s not a partisan point. Chappelle just made it for us.
