And I get that sometimes the method is the madness, in the sense that it’s hard to explain how one does something when all you recall is flailing attempts at coordination.

But, I am genuinely curious, how do you pick colors when painting your landscapes or Google Maps locations? The colors are all … not what you’d expect on closer inspection but exactly perfect overall. It’s like a painting that looks like a photo with your glasses off. And I love it.

The program I use, GIMP, has this specific filter called "waterpixels". I'll start with the rough lineart of what I want, turn the lineart into a pattern

Choose "waterpixels" from the filters, set "superpixels color" to "random", and then spend the next 10 000 years tweaking the resulting mess into shades and volumes of my liking.
