This one speaks to me on a personal level
I find it funny where in both comics and fanfiction
No one gets right how much Dick Grayson should be eating?
(Warning to everyone from here on bc I get into calories and plz don’t read on if you have issues around weight/ food thank you!)
About that butter in coffee, my grandfather was a 6'3" brickhouse farmer, who every night drank the whole village under the table, and woke up at 4am to his favourite drink of black coffee with a couple of spoons of ghee. I wouldn't be surprised if Dick occasionally indulged in that to punctuate those 2-3 sleepless night streaks chasing a case.
Also, yes, normalise a super athlete like Dick Grayson eating 7k calories daily. This isn't a tiny thin no-muscle shrinking daisy as certain Batfam spaces love to depict him as.
Yes, I hate that so much.
Like I am a (female) farmer from a farmer family, which is still a way lower level of activity/calory deficit than whatever Dick is doing. I eat a shit ton of food, I`m always snacking on nuts and dried fruit and drink lemonade when I notice that I am getting weaker. During the main season the lunch my mother makes is regulary not enough, so me and my siblings supplement it with whatever food we can quickly get/eat during the remaining (half an hour) lunch break.
My brother is always eating, every time he goes by a backery he buys and eats as many backed goods as he can carry and eats them in a session. He spoons a glass of peanut butter every day during the main season (and then leaves the empty glasses everywhere).
I never got the complaint about Damian not dehumanizing humans as soon as he became a vampire. As a vegetarian he already doesn`t eat beings that his species considers food resources because of their capacity for suffering. Continuing this ideology into his new life as a vampire absolutely makes sense.
We see that other characters in DC are still the same in many ways after being bitten. The main difference is that they consider humans as food-resource and treat them as we treat food-animals.
this is literally the only good internet take i’ve ever read on this book
Sorry, I love Nabokov`s Lolita and I disagree with most of the takes in the reblogs .
I agree that the horror of the storyand the beauty and seduction of the text is supposed to be a horribly funny dissonance.
But I never understood the idea of being seduced by Humbert Humbert the figure, his text, charm or whatever. He is an absolutely reprehensible character and annoyingly arrogant, stupid and just plainly a loser in every scene. I never had to remind myself of what he was doing or moralize the book (I often enjoy antagonists/villain characters in fiction no matter the horror of the acts), I just found him winy and horrible, like an accumulation of the worst traits of all annoying older and/or intellectual men who thought themselves smarter then they are I ever met.
That didn't make the book any less enjoyable and I am going to be so arrogant to claim that that is not a "wrong" way to read the book or one that goes against what Nabokov intentended when writing the book.
While reading the book I really felt like the author also hated Humbert Humbert. Even in Humbers own narrative he is just soo pathetic and horrible, every second sentence just seems to drip with disgust for the protagonist, while not actually doing so in the main text? I am still amazed how that even works?! So much in the book happens in the subtext or in secondary meanings in metaphors etc. And it is just so plainly visible and obvious at the same time! Honestly that is also what makes the book wayyy more interesting than just "He is horrible but seems nice/good and talks pretty!"
Also if I am already talking about Lolita, as someone who worked in and studied entomology, I really need to disagree with the take that the Nymphettes are mostly named after butterflies. The more important and as far as I have seen never mentioned connection is obviously with Nymphs aka the sexually immature (children) stage in insects.

He keeps saying he’s ‘just’ stretching
We all know he's just in a horrible bout of depression and doesn't have the emotional capacity to vocalise how useless and burnt-out he feels, so he does something intimately familiar and usually impressive, so you can compliment him and maybe give him back a sliver of his self-esteem without him having to spell out all his insecurities and exhaustion
Are you ok?
Octopus "embracing" a shark.
Kind of reminded me of a fic I read not too long ago (no idea which one) with Dick as Octopus-Mer and Jason as Shark-Mer
Octopus "embracing" a shark.
choose the comic writer i’m should axe murder first
Tom King
Grant Morrison
Devin Grayson
I want to know their sins
Tom King used to be CIA in iraq, so he is the one with actual sins. It is pretty likely that he is responsible for the death of people or even killed them directly. He gave up his CIA career to become a comic book writer instead. His writing is pretty obviously informed a lot by his trauma and guilt. Actually makes for some good stories about psychological trauma when he is at his best and terrible stories that make your favourite hero a drug addict, murderer or just plain crazy when he is at his worst.
Tumblr people don't like Morrison's writing for some reason and they can sometimes seem a bit asshole-y/arrogant I guess? They also wrote some of my favourite comic story lines and made Animal Man a vegetarian and animal rights activist, are vegetarian, non-binary and have a magic-based believe system, so kinda based in my opinion. Tbf there are some not completely unfounded claims of racism/sexism in their writing, especially with Talia, which fair but at that point I might as well stop reading comics at all.
Devin Grayson showed her own non-reflected racism in older storylines and interviews, but tbh it really seemed well-meant and more uneducated than mean-spirited and purposeful. She also pretty heavily projected and wrote her own (at that point not completely intellectually processed) experiences with rape and sexual assault into her Nightwing run, e.g. the main character was raped on panel. People like to make up shit about her. Definitely a mostly sexism based narrative.
OMG THIS LOOKS SO GOOD
I literally can't wait for this movie you guys have no idea, I don't care if I'll be 28 or 46 I'll be running to the movie theater as soon as it drops
I have finally found my people, everywhere else on the internet people were way to negative. It looks amazing and I*m so excited!

IN 150 CHARACTERS OR LESS - Nikita Gill
The more I see artists whose work I generally enjoyed (or who were known for being progressive/feminist) turn out to be terrible people, the more I realize, that I should trust my own gut instinct while consuming art. I tend to just ignore it when art makes me uncomfortable and give the artist the benefit of the doubt as long as they have the right public image.
This is not an intelligent or good way of consuming art.
When an author writes about "mannish hands" as a negative trait and makes teenage girl me feel insecure about her "mannish hands" that's not feminist writing no matter the author's image.
When I can't finish a book because the main character and the whole male assemble is misogynist in a way that feels gross, while all female characters are objectified and sexualized by the plot, then I shouldn't blame myself for not understanding the appeal of an extremely popular book by an author whose other works I liked.
I'm not talking about attacking artists based on gut instinct, just about trusting my own brain, heart and gut more than the main stream opinion. Because the main stream is still misogynist and shaped by rape culture.
was lawrence miles right when he said you’d stop at nothing to cop off on goth girls?
Who's Lawrence Miles? And I've never had a goth girlfriend, no. Mike Dringenberg had a lot of friends in the Utah Goth scene so they were the visual inspiration for Death and for many of the characters Mike drew from Sandman 6 until the beginning of Season of Mists.
Same energy.
Lawrence Miles the goat, speaking the truth and getting clowned for it.
I'm on the wikipedia page for edible dormice did you know these fuckers literally secrete a glue that lets them walk up anything
i'm not fucking with you
what the hell
So when a lizard drops its tail to escape it’s fine, but when I the edible dormouse-
The tail thing happens a lot and really quickly (we got a lot of edible dormice living in my home and a house cat). While they are very cute they are also stupid as fuck and keep on dying in weird ways. They can easily be caught by tiny baby cats, they crawl into toilets (I've woken up and went to the toilet only to need to start an impromptu rescue mission more then once), watering cans and other water bodies and drown. One also crawled behind the dryer and got dried by the hot air while it is running,

My emotional (cat) journey living in Athens for a few months:
OMG so many cute cats <3
So cuddly! And so many sleep on top of cars and on other cute/funny places!
It's great that the locals take such great care of them! There are shelters and places with cat food everywhere!
Some of these cats look kind of sick and have injuries. They also do tend to come a lot to beg for food.
Why does it always smell like cat poop everywhere? Why are the stray cats trying to get into my apartment? And some of the cats on the islands look like they are starving.
Wow, cats are really just Athens' pigeons.
is your objection to mists of avalon because marion zimmer bradley was a monster, or is it just the book itself? (i haven't read it since i was a teenager, and for whatever reason the warlord chronicles made more of an impression on me when it came to modern arthurian retellings-- idk if that's better or worse)
Oh, I hated the book well before Marion Zimmer Bradley was revealed to be a detestable sex criminal, for reasons entirely unrelated to her real-world crimes.
However, some Mists of Avalon specific crimes include:
Writing a book that is not so much a story as a tedious polemic about how yonic egalitarian ~Celtic~ paganism was destroyed by the brutal militant power of Christianity and the penis, an idea that was both stupid and deeply academically dated by the time of Mists of Avalon's publication.
Her characterization of Guinevere, which is to this day the most misogynistic portrayal I have ever seen, including 14th century and Victorian depictions.
I use "characterization" lightly, since most of the people in this book are dull mouthpieces for ideologies, or a meager assembly of one to two personality traits, especially the men. (Morgaine is the most special princess of all, so she sometimes gets up to three personality traits!)
The male characters are paper dolls, which is an issue when you're re-telling the Arthurian saga. When you're doing a feminist retelling of the Arthurian saga it's actually an even worse issue, because:
She isn't a creative enough writer to take liberties with plot (something this book has in very short supply), so she's stuck with the framework of the legends, which usually involve women attempting to trick or compete for the male characters. Unfortunately, as perviously stated, the male characters are not good, so you're left with a bunch of women backbiting and fighting and risking it all for some interchangeable dipshit, which doesn't reflect well on them. For a book that's all about how women belong to some sacred and beautiful vagina sisterhood, the female characters in this book sure spend a lot of time hating one another for being prettier than them.
It's too long. It's two hundred and thirty six pages longer than Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, widely praised as one of the best books of the 21st century. We simply do not require all that, Marion.
Saint Patrick catches the stray of all time here; he's ported over to England for some reason, becomes Arthur's personal confessor, and boy he just hates women! The worst, those women!
Needless changing of people's names. Lancelet? Come on.
The reduction of early Christianity (and medieval Christianity) to basically whatever your personal childhood priest/pastor said that bothered you is an absolute epidemic in genre writing, and it's all over this book. The poster child for "he would not say that" but "he" is a bunch of monks on Lindisfarne.
This isn't a cardinal sin, but if a story is all about the tides of Goddess-blessed pagan freedom and ~sexuality~, then the sex scenes should be good, right? Like, these are thematically load-bearing, they need to hit. In a turn of events that everyone saw coming if they've read this far, Mists of Avalon is a "big, meaty phallus" sort of book.
That's not all, but I'm tired of thinking about this dumb story now and frankly it's a crime that Arthur, Lancelot, and Guinevere have a three-way in this book, and it neither fixes everything or makes anything worse. Mists of Avalon: a radical reimagining that never meets a novel idea it won't squander.
All of this, I first read the book and then found out about the allegations and was not surprised. For me it was absolutely a "It's always the ones you most suspect" kind of situation. The weird sexualization of the female teenage characters in the writing was uncomfortable to read at best and already made me wonder if she had a problematic relationship to teenage girl's sexuality while reading.
And the way the author wrote Guinevere's POV was terrible and made me doubt her capacity for theory of mind and empathy. She built up an unsympathetic straw-woman character and made the reader read unrealistic made-up thought processes for half of the book.
