hi guys, i would like to read more fantasy books by POC authors and i need recs. I read a book about african mythology last year and it was so good i need more recs about different mythologies! or just fantasy is fine!

I've read N.K. Jemisin's The Awakened Kingdom novella but not her Inheritance Trilogy, but I've heard good things. Also Carmen Maria Machado's Her Body and Other Parties collection.

If you like sci-fi, I highly recommend Nnedi Okorafor's Binti. Ken Liu's stories and novellas are great too, especially The Man Who Ended History: A Documentary (novella).

If you like horror, I like Stephen Graham Jones, especially Mapping the Interior.

TODAY'S QUESTION:

How do you dal with writer's lock? Is there a tried and true way that gets you unstuck every time?

Usually my writer's block is "I'm on scene A and I know what I want to do for scene C, but I don't know how to get there." In that case, I'll just skip to the scene I want to write. If I need to, I'll make a note in brackets for scene B. When I progress through the story, I'll either figure out what I need to do for scene B or discover I don't really need more than a transition or line break to go from A to C.

If it's the kind of writer's block where I have no idea what to do next, I take a break. I'll shower, garden, walk the dog, fold laundry--whatever I need to do to clear my head. Sometimes the answer comes to me and sometimes it takes longer. If a solution isn't coming to me, sometimes I'll start on another writing project just to make the first one jealous.

Happy Ace Week!

So I'm in the early stages of dating someone. I spent like 5 weeks after the first date trying to figure out how I felt and whether or not I wanted to pursue something when I didn't want most of the trappings of (stereo)typical dating, like wanting to spend all your time together, commitment, end goal of moving in together, etc. So we just never talked about it and hung out as friends.

When I realized my feelings were romantic, I sat down with him to talk through all this. And it turns out that every single hang-up I had about dating are things he also hates about dating or are just non-issues.

All of which is to say that whether you want something romantic, platonic, QPR, or other, you will find people who want the same things you do, and beautiful things can come from honest conversations.

Update: The boyfriend and I have celebrated our first anniversary. He told me that this is the healthiest relationship he's ever been in and tells me time and again how lucky he is to be with me. I always thought I had high self-esteem, and I have a loving, supporting family and friend group, but I have lost count of how many times I've cried realizing that he not only loves me as-is but thinks I'm the most wonderful person on the planet.

Again, whatever kind of relationship you want, whether or not you want a relationship, you deserve love and acceptance. You matter. Your identity matters. And don't let anyone tell you differently.

And Richie is Crowley because they think they're cool but are just wet nerds pining over their best friends and they'll abandon everyone if it means saving their friend and they're quick to tease their friend but even quicker to build them up when they're scared.

something something Richie is Aziraphale because they're terrified of going against others' expectations of them so they meet those expectations to a comical degree and because they're so terrified of their friend getting hurt or in trouble. And Eddie is Crowley because they follow expectations to the bare minimum allowed and they're snarky but also sensitive and got a rotten deal in life.
