Rue and Tasha are exuding "I am a person. You are not." vibes, and are very much aligned with the struggle for personhood and Becoming. I am you, but not. I am you, but I do not want to be. I am you, but I am becoming myself.

On the other hand, Nemeia's memory loss creates the tension for her; amnesia unlocks the repressed Madwoman in the Attic and gives her an opportunity to develop a sense of self beyond the expectations of an abusive, domineering father. Severance creates a piece of Helena that gets to rebel and fight and live via Helly, and Nemeia's amnesia does the same for her.

if he's noticed Rue's intent to remove himself from his company, or avoid it entirely as she does on most occasions, Gortash gives no indication of the fact. He does, however, politely half - turn in order to usher her into the receiving chamber and then falls into step beside her.

Gortash knows she'd rather be rid of him immediately, and he himself has outstanding business in the lower level cells, but again: there is no shame knowing of those few wheat stalks that stand out from among the chaff. Every element of a network is worth having at least some cursory knowledge of.

“He took to me,”  she responds.  “I only answered His call.”  His assessment is, woefully, not entirely untrue, though the phantom of a frown curves her mouth at the mention of the General.  “We are all united here by a shared purpose.  Nothing more, nor less.”

This is true, and not.  She does what is required of her, but it is no religious fervor that drives Rue’s loyalty.  Her own survival is the crux of it, and she survives with Ketheric Thorm.  If and when she must die, she intends to do so with a soul in her, and not a moment sooner—and souls are cheap among an army of the enslaved masses.  No True Soul will need one when the call finally comes. 

“The shadows are growing restless with the disturbances.  They have old hungers, and now we bring meals in and out, in and out.”  She pauses for only a moment.  “And there have been Harper scouts.”  This is not entirely new;  they have monitored the shadowlands since Ketheric Thorm fell and unleashed the curse, but now, they have information to report back with.  Where Rue dispatches one, two more appear later, searching for their missing brothers.
