When you grow up in a household where complaining about a problem is a way to start the conversation of "how do we fix this problem?", it's really hard to get used to the way some people just complain as a way of narrating their entire existence. Because my first instinct is to start troubleshooting:
If the current thing is bad, what'd be the better option? What should there be instead?
How do you plan to get to the better option? How will you improve the situation?
What do you want me to do in order to improve this situation?
And if the answer to all three questions is "I don't know, nothing I guess", then I already have a solution for you: you should shut the fuck up.
Or people who believe this should be the ones to STFU.
Sometimes we want to know we're not alone in a situation. Or sometimes we want OTHERS to know they're not alone. Humans are a social species. Sometimes we tell each other things just to tell each other.
Venting to a trusted audience is a legitimate, recognized coping mechanism that can help people's mental/emotional health, which can in turn help them to do whatever it is they need to do to fix the problem.
Assuming that they need help and are too passive-aggressive to ask for it is, in itself, passive-aggressive and also infantilizing.
Unfortunately, my boyfriend, who suffers from having a partner with ADHD, and keeps complaining about the inconveniences of my brain being bad to me, who also suffers from my brain being bad, isn't helping anyone fix the situation.
I keep telling him that the only way to stop having to deal with a partner's ADHD is to not have a partner with ADHD, but he won't fix the problem and get someone better than me because he doesn't want to. He doesn't want to fix the problem, he wants to bitch about it.
So we're just going to ignore that the message of voices-sys was basically 'if you don't let me vent to you, you're a bad person, and I have the right to unload all my shit onto you because I consider you a trusted audience, and if you don't comply you're evil for ruining my coping mechanism'?
Because that's a terrible take. No one has to listen to you if they don't want to, and it's perfectly okay for anyone to set a boundary in that regard. And they don't have to provide you with a reason either, they can just say 'I don't want people to do this to me' and that has to be accepted.
Was that boundary set a little aggressively in this case? Sure. Does that invalidate the boundary? Hell no.

So apparently, according to my partner, it's not normal to pass out after swallowing a bite of food wrong. Apparently it's not even common knowledge what swallowing wrong means.
