He's smart, he's resourceful, he has a very dry sense of humour. He's deeply emotional, there are multiple moments in the movie where he almost breaks down crying (He deserves a proper cry tbh). He has a conscience. He is haunted by the things he has done and he genuinely wants to atone for them.

Simon is, at least for me, someone who wants deep down to be a better person, but has never been given the opportunity to change. For most of his life he has been beaten down and abused, forced to become a soldier for a death cult just to survive. And every time he tries to do do some good, to try and redeem himself, the universe spits in his face. He was rewarded for his efforts on Filament Station with it's destruction, and the deaths of 62 people. His hopes of rehabilitation in the COI are dashed when his Conviction Realisation turns out to be a suicide mission.

I think his focus on survival feeds into this as well. His "do what you need to do in order to see another day" mentality is here as well, but part of the reason he wants to live so badly because he wants to be better. He wants the opportunity to prove that he can be better. But the world doesn't care how hard he tries, he was never going to get a fair chance in the first place.

I think his anger gets the best of him too though, and he hates himself for it. Deep down he doesn't want to hurt anyone, not really, but aggression and violence are the only things he's ever known. He's incredibly torn up about accidentally irradiating Ava and her crew, and apologises about it profusely. He says sorry to the controls after he bashes them in frustration (which I know is just a throwaway joke but still it fits his characterisation really well).

i dont know where i first heard this from, but i subscribe to the idea that the IL universe is an alternate timeline of the HM universe. the stars got ate now everything sucks

However, how exactly is Simon meant to uh. survive? I mean its a very supernatural story he's getting yeeted from but like just so everyone knows, submarines and spaceships are designed basically opposite from each other, in that only one can handle negative pressure and only one can handle positive pressure. I did see one where Simon was just like floating out there and for some reason they decide to take him inside the ship and somehow he lived?
