I strongly support animal testing, and not just for disease research. Without animal testing medical research would essentially stop. It’s a very important part of the process. You can’t replace animal testing with anything like computer modeling because in order to model something you have to know how its parts work and science has only started to scratch the surface of the complex biochemistry of life.

I also support animal testing in safety research. Obviously if there’s a way to avoid testing any animal or person that should be used, but sometimes there isn’t. Some might say, “Why don’t you test on humans who choose to be test subjects?” Sounds nice, but think about the kind of person who would take experimental drugs or risk being blinded by cosmetics for a little extra money; they would have to be in a very desperate situation to take that kind of risk. Animal testing is ugly, but I’d rather have a blinded rat than a blinded desperate poor person.
