In atla, Sokka hadn't seen suki since the Kiyoshi episode, and when they met again in the serpents pass that was after the whole north pole situation with yue, and that was why at any potentially dangerous moment, Sokka would rush to try and protect Suki – which is already established. HOWEVER, Suki didn't know about the North Pole, and last she'd seen Sokka, he was still adjusting to chugging I Respect Women juice for breakfast and realizing that women were very capable, so do you think that in the Serpents Pass episode, instead of thinking Sokka was trying to protect someone he cared about, Suki just thought he still thought she was incapable of protecting herself??
