Death Noteās Biggest Plot Holes also known as Melloās Greatest Hits:
1. The missile. I just cannot believe that Light calls out within the narrative that itās completely nuts that Mello has this missile and then we justā¦ move on. The question of itās existence is never answered. Itās so infuriating itās funny again.
2. Melloās injuries. I can sort of forgive this for the sake of narrative flow, but it is not actually possible for Mello to get on a plane from the West to the East Coast only HOURS after the explosion, still bleeding from his face and all presumably, and then just be completely scarred and healed up in 8 daysā¦ā¦ Please.
3. Sayuās kidnapping. Once again, this one is forgivable for narrative flow, but the mafia shouldnāt have been able to kidnap Sayu as quickly as they did. Distance and timezones exist! Time-space is real!
Mello just LOVES to rewrite the laws of reality, I guess?? Good for him??
Thereās some other things that bother me to a degree, but theyāre more issues of contrivances (Near finding Mikami, Matsuda getting super lucky at Yotsuba, etc) than of outright plot holes. I agree with most of this, just want to elaborate on Sayuās kidnapping. Are you referring to how fast it took them to kidnap her or how fast it took her to get to America? For the former I think itās reasonable to assume they set up some kind of relay system in Japan when they carried out Kitamuraās kidnapping given they still had people present at the airport to escort Soichirou. They wouldāve just contacted their members stationed there to do it especially since Kitamura and Sayu wouldāve lived in somewhat the same area already. For the latter I donāt have a reliable place to read death note right now so if they stated the amount of time that passed between when they were informed of the kidnapping to when Mello contacted them with confirmation she arrived and it was an unrealistic amount of time then yeah I definitely agree to that point.
This made me go back and actually figure out the times again, Iād operated on memory when making the claim that itās unrealistic. Japan is 16 hours in the future from LAās perspective, for everyoneās reference.
October 10th early evening PST / October 11th, midday JST: Mello issues the order to kidnap Sayu. October 11th, ca. 3 to 4pm JST: Sayu is actually kidnapped October 11th, 11:30pm JST: Mello informs Soichiro he has Sayu. October 12th, 4am JST: Mello confirms Sayu arrived in LA.
So thereās only a few hours between Melloās order and Sayuās kidnapping, but there is around 12 or 13 hours between her being grabbed and her being secured in LA. That is BARELY possible, since the estimated flight time is just around 12 hours as well. I suppose youāre right, this one isā¦. doable, even if itās a pretty impressive feet of organization. Oh yeah, the drama is great, I mean it takes time to get used to some of the characters being completely different than their original counterparts (Light...) and the plot is dumb at times but it's super entertaining imho I've been rewatching it lately

Actually besides the anime I havenāt! I read Another Note and enjoyed it but thatās more of a spin off/hypothetical prequel. Probably if I was going to watch one first Itād be the TV drama though, itās caught my curiosity a few times?

Also if anyone ever had the same question I did about how Kiyomi setting everything on fire worked: the motorcycle was left with her. I Donāt remember her mentioning that to Light on the phone though when explaining her situation. Did he expect her to use the paper and pen/cil to try boy scouting it? Wild.
Ok not sure how coherent this is but I was thinking a bit more about what was going through Melloās mind at the end of the series since Iāve seen whether or not he knew he was going to die and why he took his helmet off questioned in the past and was trying to fit that in. I was kind of on the fence about it before but considering what I said the other day means his plan was achievable without dying, I think Iām pretty firmly in the camp that he didnāt know he would die. Obviously it was risky but Melloās always been comfortable with calculated risks if they would catch people off guard and benefit him.
I also wondered if it was possible to not risk himself and get the same results by just telling Near thereās a possibility of a fake through Lidner. But he wouldnāt do that when heās already having a tough time conceding his goal for a complete solo victory. So say his thought process arrived at the idea he had two options. Either give Near the one advantage he has and let him handle it, or make use of Nearās plan on his own terms to set up a situation where it would have been impossible to catch Kira without him. The latter is what I think his overall intentions were there.Ā
As for the helmet the simple answer Iāve always went with is that he had to change into his disguise prior to exiting so anyone catching up to them wouldnāt think anything of it. Rather than making himself a target he seemed to be pretty consistent with taking precautions. Just made the mistake of deciding it wasnāt dangerous to agree to give her cover early in the end. And to Kiyomiās credit, she did a good job of acting normal in such a terrifying situation.Ā

Sometimes I wonder how much Halle knew about Mello's final plan. Like do you think she knew Kiyomi would get thrown in the back of a truck and all that jazz? Did they ever explain what Mello was actually aiming to do with Kiyomi in the story itself? That's something I've never been clear about the entire time I've been in this fandom, what was his overall goal with that move? If anyone knows I'd love to hear some thoughts, I still find several parts of the finale confusing even now
Itās tough to say for sure but I donāt think she knew much about the plan itself, just that he was going to do something in general. She wouldnāt have had a delayed reaction if she knew he was going to come for Kiyomi specifically, and her reflections at the warehouse sounded much more speculative than as if he kept her in the loop. Mello probably wouldnāt give details to her in general unless it was something he wanted Near to know. It is strange how she knew where to find the crash site first when the SPK didnāt track her phone call like Light did, but itās not like Mello planned to crash there either so that wouldnāt suggest anything besides the NPA probably sending them the information before setting off.
As for the plan itself well..my best guess involves how he was under the impression from Kitamura that Kira was willing to silence hostages he knew about. Presumably Halle told him Nears plan in at least vague details, so he knew how big a risk it was. At this point in time Mello was much more cornered than Near, Heād recently recovered from injury, lost all his manpower with only a friend helping, and his name had been leaked. On top of that it seemed like he was frustrated heād been wasting his time making no progress by watching Misa with no other leads, so the idea of catching Kira by himself probably did start to seem unrealistic, being why he looked so crushed when he said heād have to doĀ āitā (help Near).
If Near and Mello are two halves of L, you could consider Mello the half Light claimed Near Lacked when he commented how L would have tested the note book and considered it was a fake. Mello was no stranger to experimenting with the notebook and likely much more wary of Light/Kira given how he previously underestimated him and then got burned for it. So if after hearing the details of the plan, if he considered the possibility of a fake notebook, he could have intended to confirm it by forcing X Kira into writing Kiyomiās(who Halle may have told him was acting as their sole source of contact) name through putting her in a compromising situation. Then had she not died, he likely wouldāve played it by ear, as there was still a few days before the meeting, she could possibly be used as leverage, a source of information or at the very least heād have succeeded in cutting off the two Kiraās means of contact.Ā

ā#did mello lose all his manpower except matt?ā I donāt remember there being any indication he had other people working for or with him, but that reminds me he probably had at least some points of contact through which he obtained the motorcycle and the truck. Matt himself had some heavy duty equipment too, which I donāt know if you could pinpoint as belonging to him as a hobby, Wammyās or someone Mello made relations with while he was amassing power in the mafia. Itās also worth noting the vehicles wouldāve been something purchased or received from someone in Japan considering they boarded planes pretty abruptly to follow Misa. Itās probably not something Ohba thought through but itās kind of up in the air how much support they hypothetically had to pull off what they did. Iād still say itās significantly less than heās used to at that point and about as much as he was capable of?Ā
I guess another stray thought could be that given how he wanted to separate himself from Wammyās, Itād be strange for him to go and contact an old friend from there for help if he had other options. Especially since he was implied to feel a bit bad about involving him to the point he lost his life. Maybe that was hindsight but I think Mello is more of a mix of decisive and result driven than solely impulsive. Given time he thinks things through pretty thoroughly.
