AKA Regulus Black as one prophesized to defeat the Dark Lord
Sybill Trewlawneyâs prophecy states:Â
The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...born to those who thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies...and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord know not...and either must die at the hand of other for neither can live while the other survives...the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies...
Granted, some of this might seem like a stretch, but really, all prophecies kind of are. Especially in the Harry Potter universe, where itâs hinted that they are self-fulfilling. Let me explain.
The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...
The prophecy was given by Sybill in 1980 and Regulus died in 1979 retrieving a Horcrux. In canon Regulusâ final act could actually have been a factor in the prophecy being triggered in the first place.Â
But thatâs a different story, I want to focus on if the prophecy had been given while Regulus was still alive. The prophecy, in this case, would be triggered once Regulus starts get disillusioned with the Death Eaters and their supposedly righteous cause. It being fully set in motion once Regulus decides to turn away from the Dark Lord and discovering that heâs created Horcruxes.
Born to those who thrice defied him
Do I think Walburga or Orion ever went out of their way to defy Lord Voldemort? No. Half-blood, orphan Tom Riddle, on the other hand... I could see them both snubbing him multiple times through their time at Hogwarts, especially with a family motto like Toujours Pur.Â
Orion would have been 2-3 grades below Tom in school and Walburga would have been 1-2 grades above him. I canât see either of them caring about Tom Riddleâs opinions/authority, even if he was a Prefect, due to inferior (in their eyes) blood status.
Born as the seventh month dies...
Regulus Black could easily share a birthday with either Neville Longbottom or Harry Potter. We were never given a canon birthday for Regulus and heâs literally named after a star in the Leo constellation. Leo birthdays are from July 23-August 22.
And the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal
I think this is the sketchiest part of this theory, because Regulus was marked. He had the Dark Mark, but that mark symbolized him being a subordinate of the Dark Lord, not an equal.Â
I will say though, I donât think Voldemort ever saw anyone as his equal. Not Dumbledore, not Bellatrix, and not Harry Potter, either. I think he was too arrogant to ever consciously acknowledge that another wizard/witch could be on par with him. So, heâd never purposely give the impression to another person that they were on equal footing.
Anyway, just because Regulus didnât have the mark when he retrieved the first Horcrux, doesnât mean he wouldnât gain one as heâs searching for the others, especially if Voldemort unearthed his intentions, somehow.Â
Regulus being the first person to discover that Voldemort had made Horcruxes would make him a severe threat, and probably the closest thing to what the Dark Lord would consider his enemy.Â
Which, if you see someone as that big of a threat to you personally, thereâs got to be a reason that you would feasibly think they could take you out. And thus, they could be considered equals, like opponents on opposite sides of a chessboard.
But he will have power the Dark Lord know not...
This could apply to Regulus gaining something along the way of his Horcrux hunt, but also could just refer to him having the knowledge in the first place. Especially since Voldemort is unaware (at least at the beginning) that he has that knowledge.
Either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives ...
This is basically the Horcrux hunt itself. Either Regulus with destroy all the Horcruxes, rending Voldemort mortal, and able to be killed. Or Voldemort hunts Regulus down and he dies before completing his task.
