truthfully, it took yohan all morning to pluck up the courage to even walk to the library. one would not say he was nervous, but he’d definitely considered the idea, as he wrapped his head around a dozen ways to accept being stood up, laughed at, or see jinseok show up only to turn around and never come back. jinseok’s name had popped up on his phone screen all night, and the one before that, too. no, he wasn’t nervous; worried about feeling, or looking stupid perhaps, or some where in between, tied with the inability to get one singular kiss, off his mind.

regardless, yohan thumbs at his neck, curls his finger around some stray hairs that settle there. jinseok did in fact show up and yohan couldn’t have been more pleased, the apple of his cheeks a particularly bright shade of red ever since he’d walked over to their usual table. “we can study if you want,” yohan begins, fingers thumbing away, "or you can tell me to fuck off if i got the wrong end of the stick,” a nervous laugh, shaky at best, “but before we get lost beneath an mountain of math, if you’d rather go and feed the ducks with me, or enjoy the sun whilst it lasts, i.. wouldn’t be mad.”

               “    ya !    you  kissed    me    with  that  dirty mouth ?    ”      he  teases,    just  low  enough  so  only  two  sets  of  ears  are    privy    to  his  jest    ;      lips  pull  tight  and  cheeks  arch  high,    smile  on  full  display  for  younger  to  see        —        after  the    kiss   they’d  shared,    jinseok  would  be  hard - pressed  to  mask  his    feelings.      why  hide  it  anymore ?    he’d  worked  so  hard  to  be  here  now,    nestled  right  where  he  wanted    so  badly    to  be,    in  the  bosom  of    shy    boy.

pointer  finger  hooks  around  younger’s  pinky,    gently    tugging  preoccupied  hand  to  take  the  lead        —        anything    to  distract  him  from  tonight’s  homework     . . . .    at  least  for  a  little  while  longer.    further  away  does  he  pull  yohan  from  the  boredom  that  lies  within  the  library  and  into  the  cool  afternoon  breeze,      “    you  had  me  at    before    math.    i’ll  go  to  the  moon  with  you  if  it  means  i  don’t  need  to  see  another  percentage  for  a  few  more  hours.    ”      they’ve  put    considerable    distance  between  themselves  and  their  responsibilities,    yet  jinseok  holds  onto  single  digit  like  it  were  his    soul’s  purpose.    (  if  you  asked  him,    it  might  not  be    far    off.  )

it’s  nearing  the  end  of  the  night,    charlie  knows  that,    but  he    aches    knowing  just  as  well  that  other  will  inevitably  return  home  and    both    will  sleep  alone  tonight.    

                              why  was  it  so  hard  to  let  him  go  tonight ?                                               they’ve  done  this    before,    haven’t  they ? 

               ‘  a  thousand  times,  ’    he  tells  himself,    ‘    we’ve  done  this  a  thousand  times    ’        —        spent  the  evening  together,    playful    banter  and  laugher  filling  their  lungs,    lazing  along  busy  streets,    milling  through  groups  of  students  enjoying  their  weekend.    like  a  thousand  times  before,    cheeky  boy  shuffles    closer    to  mickey’s  side,    arm  slipping  around  him  to  guide  him  through  distracted  groups    ;      just  so  i  don’t  lose  you,    head  turned  and  neck  craned  to  whisper,    lilt  of  a  smile  evident  in  softened  voice.

by  now,  he’s  forced  himself  to  let  go,    give  him  the  space  to  walk  freely.      yet  as  they  approach  intersection,    charlie  tests  just  how  close  he  can  walk  beside  other  before  knees  go  weak.      tenacity    mounts  as  their  hands  brush  against  one  another’s,    fingers  momentarily  tangling  by  happenstance    ;      as  he  spots  the  entrance  of  yeouido  park,    he    purposefully    slots  digits  between slender  ones  to  tug  him  in  new  direction.    gently  does  he  pull  him  away  from  the  crowds  to  secluded  spot,    away  from    prying    eyes.    couples  dot  the  street  lined  with  cherry  blossoms,    snapping  photos  to    remember    their  night  together,    oblivious  to  anyone  but  each  other.      he  thinks  to  do  the  same,    that  he  wants  the  same,    but  perhaps  not  on  film.    mickey  is  still  talking  as  they  walk,    something    about  a  video  game  they’re  playing,    but  all  he  can  hear  are  own  thoughts,    urging  him  to  his    own    point,    and  the  thump  of  heart  pounding  in  ears.

he  can  feel  his  stomach  knotting  together  as  gaze  flickers  from  wide,    brown  eyes  to  plush  tiers  that  move  with  enthusiasm  about  something  he’s    still    struggling  to  put  together.    finally  joined  pair  stop  after  strangers’  conversations  fade  out  of  earshot  and  they’re  left  with  the  muted  sounds  of  the  city  beyond  blooming  park.    reluctantly  he  releases  gentle  hold  on  mickey’s  hand.      abruptly    lips  stop  moving  in  response  to  charlie’s  peculiar  behaviour,    lost  is  his  chance  to  clue  into  conversation.      why  are  you  so  quiet ?    reticent  question  remains  unvoiced,    though  other’s  brow  wrinkles  in  intrigue ?    perhaps,    frustration    as  he’s  realises  how    tuned  out    other  is.

               ‘    kiss  him,    dumbass.    ’                                 a  chorus  of  his  friends’  voices  echo  in  his  thoughts.

never  has  he  been  good  at    lying,    or  hiding  anything  for  that  matter,    he  had  a  tell    –    or  a  few    ;      elder’s  aptitude  didn’t  fare  any  better  in  face  of    best friend.      with  breath  meant  to    clear    his  thoughts,    every  one  of  his  anxieties  retching  up  from  the  recesses  of  his  mind,    arms  extend  until  wide  palms  have  found  the  small  of  younger’s  back.      now  he’s  left  with    no  excuse    with  bodies  so  close,    moments  eclipsing  with  no  protest  to  gentle  hold,    no    rejection    to  his  sudden  advance.

               “   i’m    . .    i’m  sorry.    can  i  –    ”      kiss  you ?    

he  wants  to  finish  with  grit,    but  words  fail  him,    fading  at  the  tip  of  tongue.    so  instead,    he  garners  strength  to  finish  with  action        —        carefully,    so  carefully,    do  lips  find  mickey’s,    tips  of    trembling    fingers  hooking  into  the  fabric  that  clings  to  lithe  waist  as  opposite  digits  rise  to  slot  through  the  hair  at  the  base  of  his  neck.      eyes  fall  shut  to    luxuriate    in  a  moment  he  thinks  to  be  a  singularity,    an  idiosyncrasy  that  will  only  end  with  an  awkward  explanation.

despite  nagging  thoughts  to  the    contrary,    mickey  remains  steadfast  in  his  place,    leaning  into  his  touch ?      anxieties  melt  away  with  each    tender    brush  of  plush  tiers  against  own,    lips  slowly  moving  together,    falling  into  brief  rhythm.      every  part  of  him    craves    for  more,     to  remain  in  this  moment  a  world  away  from    reality,    yet  he  knows  it  can  only  be    fleeting.    so  it’s  with  reluctance  he  pulls  away.    eyes  fluttering  open  as  a  woozy  smile  ebbs  across  features,    attention  immediately  flickering  down  to  mickey.    searching  other’s  eyes  for  affirmation ?    assurance  he  hadn’t  muddied  the  waters  of  their  increasingly  peculiar  dynamic.    the  ghost  of  a  smile  toying  at  the  edges  of  mickey’s  lips  eases  immediate  worries,    eliciting  muted  sigh  of  relief.

IF  NOT  IN  THIS  SEMBLANCE  MADE  OF  FLESH   ,   her  hackles  would  be rose  in  absolute pique . instead   she  displays  her  annoyance  in  a  loud   ,   exaggerated  huff  and  slots  her  hands  on  her  hips  with  her  mouth twisting  into  a  FROWN.

❛ ❛      how  dare  you  in  insinuate  such  a  thing  !    ❜ ❜    she  growls   ,   eyeing  the  cat  up  and  down  with  detest . he  knew  NOTHING   ;   she  had  a  fantastic social  life   !   she  was  a  regular  old  chatty  kathy  and  people  absolutely  loved  adored  her .    ❛ ❛      i  just  don’t  get  along  with  cats   ,   that’s  all .    ❜ ❜

mong    scoffs,    eyes  rolling  as  all  attempt  at  politesse  drops  from  perpetually  respectful  demeanor        —        his  subtle,    he’d  thought,    remarks  hardly  enough  to    enflame    most,    but  perhaps  this    dog    was  sick  of  her  cage.      “    i  know  of  a  great  kennel  with  obedience  lessons.    you  should  try  them  out        –      as  it    always    seems  to  be  the    hound    who  instigates  the  fight,    hm ?    no  matter  how  prim  and  proper  their  package  is    ;    do  you  and  your  kind  always    enjoy    pestering  mine ?    ”

He sat at the back of the church, head bowed but not praying. There was no sense in it, no reason for him to reach out to a god that no longer cared. Already, Insu had sent the priest away with a stern shake of his head that said he hadn’t wanted to be bothered. Hands that were still covered in blood and ichor sat folded neatly in his lap, testament to the successful exorcism he’d just preformed. The boy, just a child, would be safe tonight – but Insu would be surprised if his own night was as peaceful.

“I was wondering if you’d come.” Eyes did drift upward when he felt a familiar presence at his side, one that understood the questions and the frustrations in the exorcist’s mind. “It’s been a while.” Weeks, maybe, since they’d last seen one another. Somehow, Gabriel’s presence made the evening a little less bleak, made him a little more willing to forgive himself for the mistakes he’d made that night. An unlikely friendship, yes, one forged in their own self-doubt and slipping faith.

“Rough night.” Understatement. “It was a kid. He’s safe, but…it wasn’t easy.” He stood then, suffocating in the confines of the church. “Let’s get out of here? Go for a walk? Get a drink? Anything but sit here, waiting for that priest to come back around.”

alter  with  rows  of  candles  lit  in    honour    of  loved  ones  past  provide  dull  light  at  the  back  of  mahogany  pews,    but  gabriel  sees  him    clearly        —        head  bent  and  hands  folded,    like    dutiful    priest  he  once  was.    stream  of  consciousness  is  silent,    though,    simply  radio  static  of  others  seeking    guidance    in  it’s  place.      “    i  could  hear  you  and  the  boy’s  mother,    louder    than  all  the  rest.    it  has  been  some  time  since  i’ve  answered    ;      i  wanted  to  make  sure  you  were    well    –    ”      tiers  part  to  speak  on  the    desperation    he’d  heard  in  his  prayers,    calling  upon  a  god  he  barely  believes  in  these  days,    but  words  fade  as  gaze  settles  on  folded  hands.    bloodied  are  the  backs  of  knuckles,    bespattered  with    ichor,    testament  to  tribulations    ;      tonight  had  been    enough    of  a  reminder,    the  difficulty  he  faces  in  battling  back  the  evil  by  sheer  will  alone,    abandoned  by    heaven’s  grace.

                “    come  then,    this  place  is    stifling    after  what  you’ve  endured,    ”      he  ushers  a  now  standing  insu  towards  grand  front  doors  with    softened    countenance,      “    fresh  air  will  do  you    well.    perhaps  something  stronger  after  you’ve  cleaned  up.    ”      palm  splays  over  aged  wood  to  push  it  open,    a  rush  of  cool,   autumnal    air  rushing  past  them  with  chill  that  threatens  to  bite  through  coat.    umber  hues  settle  on  wary  man  at  his  side  as  they  walk  at  leisured  pace  along    quiescent    streets.    hands  find  themselves  buried  deep  into  pockets  as  he  strides,    the  cold  nipping  at  the  tips  of  fingers        —        yet  to    adjust    to  climates  of  earth,    one  of  the  many    quirks    he  had  come  to  loathe  living  in    corporeal    form.      “    why  do  you  come  here  first ?    ”      neck  cranes  to  take  other  in  fully,    brow  quirked  in  intrigue,      “    it  brings  you  no  closer  to    peace,    yet  you  come  here  before  you  wash  away  the  blood  from  your  hands.    ”

yet  he  knows    why    ;     why  he  puts  the  church    before    himself  even  in  face  of  shaken  faith,    why  he  still  returns  to  find  semblance  of  peace  he  once  felt  between  holy  walls.    with  broken  wings  doth  he  still  carry  himself  to    heaven    to  plead  with  a  father  that    no  longer    listens  to  his  cries    just    to  feel  a  fraction  of  the  warmth  his    grace    once  provided.

“Human shield? You seem to think I won’t throw you to the demons to save myself.” Was he kidding? Maybe. Maybe not. That depended entirely on how good the costumes were inside the haunted house. Minjae was no fool; he knew that the key to survival in these types of things was not to be the fastest runner, but to run faster than the slowest. Besides…it wasn’t like it was really dangerous.

Right?

“I’ll be your buddy, but if there are chainsaws you’re on your own.” That was non-negotiable. Anything that loud near his face? No way. He’d run for the door and fall over gasping for air in the parking lot. (He’d done the same thing last year; that’s how he knew first hand what would happen.) “Clowns? I got you. Psycho hillbillies? I got you. Chainsaws? Nah. It’s been nice knowing you.”

Minjae was all ears when Willow leaned in closer, listening to his plan with a growing smile on his face. Avoid the haunted house and get a snack too? That sounded like the best plan he’d ever heard, and he had just the trick to make it happen. “Deal.” Though he was mildly disappointed wouldn’t get a chance to make the actors inside scream; he love dropping a couple of bug illusions here and there. Payback for all the chainsaws, after all.

“And besides, they’re basically all the same, right? People jump out and scare you. Dark. Spooky. Fog. They’ll never know we weren’t with them.” Especially if he tossed up an illusion or two to keep them focused elsewhere.

“Let’s go.” Minjae took his hand and started backing away from the line. Fingers worked behind his back, ensuring that if their friends turned around, they’d still see the two of them standing there. It would last until they disappeared into the darkness of the haunted house, and then they’d be too wrapped up in what was going on around them to notice. “Quick, before they notice. But I want a corn dog.  And fries! I mean, after all, we’re saving your cool exterior here.”

                “    if  there  are  chainsaws,    i’m  tucking  tail  and  running.    to    hell    with  my    cool  exterior.      did  you  know  those  are    real    chainsaws ?    they  just  take  the  blade  off,    no  thanks.    i’ve  met  some  –    ”      he  stutters  for  a  moment  as  his  brain  finally  catches  up  to  the  speed  of  his  mouth,    realising  chosen  words.    nevertheless,    he  persists  against  the  pull  at  his  heart        —        wiser  now  about  word  choice,      “    some  pretty    reckless    people.    what  if  they    forgot    to  take  it  off  when  they  bought  it,    hm ?    and  what  if  they    are    a  psycho  hillbilly ?    they’ll  be  eating  sliced  willow  for  dinner !    ”      long  arm  finds  its  way  securely  around  the  smaller’s  shoulders,    keeping  him  close  as  they  inch    closer    to  the  entrance.      was    this    his  way  of  ensuring  the  other  would  dart  ahead,    leaving  him  to  sulk  around  to  the  exit ?      maybe.      he  just  can’t  quite  muster  the  courage  to  go  on    his  own.

he’s  just  about  to  add  atop  his  prior    bribe    before  minjae  obliges,    gives  in  to  the  temptation  of  fried  foods  and  the  clever  dodge  of  unnecessary  frights.      wide  lips  smooth  into    charming    smile,    nodding  along        —        he’d  buy  him  everything  on  the  menu  if  it  carried  them  to  the    furthest    food  stand  away  from  the  haunted  house.      gently  he  tugs  at  other’s  hand  to  pull  him  out  of  another’s  way  and  into  the  short  line.    as  they  stand  there,    making  last  minute  decisions,    willow’s  arm  drapes  loosely  around  shoulders  once  more.     he  knows  he  ought  to  let  go  of   lithe  boy  at  his  side,    detach    himself  from  his  hip.        but  he  didn’t    want    to    ;      he  was  cute  and  this  town  always  had  a  way  of  making  him  feel    lonely.

as  they  approach  the  window,    warm  smile  greets  the    clearly    dissatisfied  teen  server.      does  it  have  anything  to  do  with  the  empty  tip  jar ?    he  wonders,    before  quickly  snapping  attention  back  to  stranger  with  order  poised  on  tip  of  tongue,      “    a  corn  dog,    a  large  fry,    and  a  fried  dough,    please.    extra  powdered  sugar.    oh  and  two  waters ?    ”      as  he  talks,    he    finally    pulls  away  from  minjae  and  fishes  out  his  wallet,    sliding  the  bill  across  the  counter  top  with  tightlipped  smile,      “    keep  the  change.    thank  you.    ”      baffled  is  the  teen  that  looks  at  the  50  dollar  bill  then  back  to  the  total  that  barely  adds  up  to  25.    as  he  turns  away,    soft  laugh  escapes,    “    no  seriously,    do  me  a    favour    so  i  don’t  have  to  exchange  my  currency.    ”      thrown  over  his  shoulder  is  the  retort  before  he  gently  ushers  other  to  the  next  window  where  they  wait  for  their  food.

               “    thanks,    ”      he  smiles  once  more,    wider  this  time,    burying  the  tinge  of  grief  that  threatens  to  mark  his  words,      “    y’know  –    for  enabling  my  avoidance  technique.    sometimes  those  haunted  houses  are  cheap,    but  sometimes  they  feel  almost      too  real.    ”      had  his  story  continued  to  be  the    scary  story    children  share  in  the  dark ?    or  did  he  look  like  the  world’s  biggest  featherless  chicken ?    a  part  of  him  wished  for  the  latter    –    sometimes    it  was  just  easier  than  explaining,    but  would  he  be  so  lucky ?

RAIN  –    melancholy   at   best,    introspective,    severely  misunderstood,    pleasure  in  the  subdued,    helping  in  your  own  way,    dreams  in  poetry,    the  slowness  of  falling  asleep,    refreshing  meditation

SUN  –    sun - bleached   clothes,    futures  that  are  too  bright,    everything  at  arm’s  length,    balancing  intensity,    blind  encouragement,    comfort  of  sleep,    distracting  sunspots  in  your  vision,    necessity  of  growth

STORM  –    chaos  with  a  purpose,    emotions  running  high,   natural  comfortable  anarchy,    high  volume,    leaving  your  mark,     brief  flashes  of  violence,    rambling  quickly,    the  intensity  of  desire

WIND  –    running  towards  instead  of  away,    instinctive  motivation,    making  an  impact,    knows  everyone  who  knows  anyone,    playful  pranks,    mood  swings  in  a  split  second,    collecting  old  trinkets,    uncontrollable  focus

SNOW  –    serene  on  the  surface,    cold  blooded  heart,    love  it  or  hate  it  attitude,    good  memories,    heavy  discussions,    sharp  determination,    relentless  resolve,    not  as  scary  as  it  seems

                “    you’re  annoying,    but  as  long  as  you  treat  me  like  a  princess,    then  i’m  willing  to    compromise,    ”      quick  is  his  wit,    lips  twisting  into  sly  smirk  as  he  challenges  elder’s  gaze  before  door  is  closed  between  them.    as  chai  moves  from  view,    eyes  cast  upwards  to  high - rise  he  can    barely    call  home.      it  was  no  surprise  that  he  spent  more  nights  tucked  into    undisclosed    boyfriend’s  side  in    unfamiliar    hotels  scattered  across  the  country.      with  strain,    indigo  can  only  recall  a    single    instance  this  year  that  he’s  spent  more  than    two    nights  in  his  own  bed,    or  chai’s  for  that  matter        —        expensive    thonglor  lofts,    rents  paid  courtesy  of  the  first  season  of  their  drama.      who    knows    what  the  second  season  will  bring ?

this  thought  both    frightens    and    excites    young  actor,    shapely  brows  bending  and  knitting  together  as  lower  tier  curls  into  soft  scowl.      “    can  we  just  run  away ?    ”      it’s  the    first    thing  that  springs  from  lips  as  chai  settles  into  his  seat,    laugh    rolling  off  tip  of  tongue  to  add    carefree,    playful  lilt  to  his  tone.    slender  fingers  slowly  slot  between  other’s  after  they  pull  away  from  the  curb,    moving  towards  a  destination  indigo  had    yet    to  set.
