Max nodded his head and decided to just come out with it rather than beat around the bush, “ We’re related. I’m your brother…well, half brother to be more exact…” he said to her, watching her closely to see how she would react.

Haylee gaped, her mind turning over the new information. Once it sank in, she bounced with excitement. “I knew it!! Well, not really but I think I felt it before my brain understood it! Oh my god, I’m not an only child anymore?? This is so awesome!!”

“You’re staring.”

“No. I’m not stress eating– It’s just a really good cupcake.”

Where’d you get it? Is it homemade? If it’s homemade can you give me the recipe? I can stress bake while you not-stress eat.

“It’s a journal. I think, as a teenage girl, I’m allowed to have one.”

Well, better hearing. Better sense of smell. Better speed. Better strenght. Eyesight. Improvements i’m sure you’ve experienced by now, or at least some of them. Also keep in mind that we’re not on our best terms with the other side of the shifters, the werewolves. Some of them hate us, and some of us hate them. So don’t be surprised when someone you’ve gotten along with till you became a coyote suddenly starts being all jumpy around you, or just starts hating on you for no reason. There’s also the matter of the packs. There are two packs in town. Three if you count the new one. The coyotes, whose Alpha I am. The werewolves, whose Alpha is Roxanne’s dad, Caleb Stark. Now, before she died, I had a conversation with Roxanne about you. She wasn’t willing to give you up to me. She wanted you to be part of her pack, because you were friends and everything. I told her it’d be wise to let me look after you in my pack until we catch whoever kills our people, because yes, those people found dead randomly, those were coyotes and wolves. Starting with my mother. We’re not highly regarded in the Stark pack so they wouldn’t have welcomed you warmly had Roxanne been here today and taken you under her wing. You’re a new pup, you’ve got a lot to learn, and i’m offering you my help. As well as a place in my pack. It is up to you if you want to be part of it or not.

Wow. Okay, I feel like I should be taking notes. So I’m in danger of being killed? By what- a werewolf? I think I’ve smelled them. More similar to our scent than a human’s but slightly unpleasant? I want to think about it and make the best possible decision... Do you think I’d be safer if I joined your pack? I would be loyal to you and everything, but I wouldn’t want to have to fight anyone. 

“Yeah – it’s adorable”

I’m so glad you like it! People can sometimes feel suffocated by the lack of excitement here, but if you ask me, it’s exciting enough in its own way.

You know me so well. Now that you mention it…you’re right. 

We should really do fireworks sometime soon, before it gets too cold. Put your pyromaniac tendencies to good use.

I’m more competitive than I am confident... Honestly, I’m not even sure I can put my money where my mouth is!

“ No it was nothing you did. I went to see my mom. Take a seat, Haylee, we need to talk.”

Okay... Does this have something to do with our last conversation?

“Pharaoh Lucas. It has a ring to it.” He said and smirked at her. When she said he couldn’t pull off the headdress he gasped and moved to lean more into her, making it harder for her to play the game. “Take it back!”

Haylee grumbled at Lucas leaning into her, but as much as she tried to push back, she wasn’t strong enough to actually push him off of her. “I was kidding, you know you look perfect in everything,” she rolled her eyes, laughing.

Lucas smirked, “You talked to big, I had to explain your place in the pyramid of Mario Kart rulers.” He teased, but he offered her a smile. When he was knocked he just laughed and returned the nudge, already plotting his next move if she were to knock his shoulder again.

“A pyramid of rulers, does that make you pharaoh?” Haylee asked, regarding Lucas thoughtfully. “I dunno, I don’t think you could pull off the headdress,” she teased.

“There’s a slight flaw in your first plan, technically the easy bake oven itself could be considered flammable with the right motivation.”

Let me guess... You have the aforementioned motivation. But in that vein, couldn’t anything be flammable with the right motivation?

Lucas grinned the entire time he played, moving his body as if it would move Yoshi on the screen. It was very rare to find Lucas not smiling, he always grinned unless he was lost in thought. He only frowned when he witnessed something unpleasant happening to someone else, never frowning for himself. He couldn’t afford to.

Haylee grimaced at the lack of effect her blue shell had. “Lucaaas, that was where I was supposed to pull aheaaad,” she whined. Not that she wanted him to let her win, but he didn’t have to be that good at the game, did he? She made a silent vow to practice Mario Kart on her own before the next time they played.

Well isn’t it just your lucky day? I’ll pick you up in twenty, if you aren’t ready I’m taking you anyway!
