I’m sorry but they will def experience the same level of racism. It will just come from mostly different groups of people. Hudson haters are obv anti-asian and justice haters are anti-black. People who hate on both of them are anti-asian and anti-black obv.
Please stop spreading the retoric that hudson experiences more racism bc these are dangerous claims to spread. Especially with intersectionally involved since justice is visibly darker skinned than him and also openly queer. So that’s an added thing people will use to hate in combination with him being poc.
This is no hate to you or anyone else but i just want to make sure everyone jnderstands this and doesn’t post weird things bc there were already people on twitter saying that a black man will never experience the level of racism that h has received and a lot of black people are understandablh not happy with this.
This is the Olympic oppression I'm referring to by the way ^.
As a Black woman, I'm standing firm that Justice will not experience the same level of vitriol that Hudson has and definitely not to the same extent in this fandom. I'm not saying he won't experience anything but it won't be the same precisely because anti-Black racism (especially in the U.S.) is spoken out against more compared to anti-Asian racism. No ones going to defend people calling Justice something like "money" or any other radicalized anti-Black words because that's seen as more blatantly racist compared to "fattest Korean" which people are still saying about Hudson till this day. And that's because that doesn't generate the same outcry. It's unfortunately true that anti-Asian racism isn't treated with the same severity as anti-Black racism. Anti-Black sentiments are much more likely to be called out earlier and by more people, so any blatant racism expressed towards Justice is going to be nipped in the bud much quicker.
Also Justice is still a bi-racial man so no, him being "darker" than Hudson won't factor into anything because he's still lightskin. However, no one's going to be doing any nazi race science to dismiss that he is half Black in the way they've been denying Hudson being half Asian this entire time. No one's going to try to say that Justice's Black parent tried to purify their bloodline by getting with his White parent.
Now if you want to talk about expanding out to the wider context of Hollywood, then we can talk about how being half Black and being half Asian are much more different. But within this fandom specifically, yeah no actor is going to experience what Hudson has. And if you don't think the ones that's been racist against Hudson don't at least recognize they'll never be able to get away with treating a Black actor the way they've treated Hudson, I don't know what to tell you. The fact that Justice is queer as well is only going to be used as a point to tokenizing him even further and use that to be even more hateful towards Hudson.
Racism and dehumanization started with book Shane, trickled into Hudson, and then expanded into other forms of discrimination. I’m open to debate, but it’s clear that this fandom treats anti-Asian racism very differently, to the point of weaponizing Hudson’s biracial identity to argue that the erasure, 1940s slurs, stripping of his POC identity, and disregard for his autonomy somehow aren’t happening because Hudson “isn’t Asian.”
That is a very different playing field from what we see with anti-Blackness, where people are generally much more attuned to recognizing the patterns and calling them out. Justice will also enter this space with an established fanbase and anti-racist HR fans who are already prepared to recognize and challenge anti-Black racism. Hudson didn't have that. Even as his own fanbase has grown, we are still fighting the deeply ingrained idea that anti-Asian racism is somehow less serious or less deserving of intervention.
Eight months in, Asian fans have repeatedly talked about being harmed by the production's apathy, the SoundCloud situation, the slurs, the stripping away of Hudson's POC identity, and the feeling of being unsafe in a fandom built around an Asian lead. And they are still being ignored.
The fake Instagram situation was another example. The anti-Asian rhetoric surrounding it was barely acknowledged, no apologies, and in some cases actually intensified, horrifically from people who had previously dubbed Hudson fans.
If we want to have a broader conversation about how Asians and Black people are racialized differently in the real world, that's a great conversation to have. But I don't think that framework accurately explains what is happening here. Anti-Asian dehumanization IS the foundation of this particular fandom, and pretending the two experiences will necessarily manifest the same way misses what we've actually watched happen over the last eight months.
Great additional from @iamnotokaywiththis-9
