I think one of the reasons why we get so many "Xie Lian needed to learn a lesson and the fall of the kingdom of Xianle was that for him" takes is that a lot of people do not deconstruct the prologue of the first book after the first read.
Because those takes are very similar to it and the prologue is the legend perpetuated by the Heavens. It's the propaganda. It's people perpetuating it going:" Here is what happens when people try to change things, they get punished...", even though he was right and if they had helped, none of this would have happened.
Xie Lian is a similar scapegoat to Wei Wuxian but Wei Wuxian died and Xie Lian became the persona non grata so that other people, heavenly official and sects can perpetuate the system without challenge.
Oh 100% yes! It’s a big deal that the prologue is blatantly misleading, by the time you’ve heard the details of the real story.
One of my CLEAREST memories of the many, many “oh shit we are doing things with that” moments — in which we realize that a recurring detail or “joke” actually does have backstory and thematic relevance — I had reading TGCF books (arcs) 1 and 2 was in book 2 when we reach the scene where Xie Lian refuses to apologize for saving a child’s life, and we see exactly how much he’s been reduced in the retelling.
The prologue/propaganda version reduces his thoughtful, well-reasoned discussions to these pithy one-liners that are easy to repeat as part of a story and present as naïve, unfounded opinions.
And years later, I still remember the feeling of reading book two and realizing, for the first time, that all of his kindness, his consideration for the feelings of others of any class, his consciousness of his own power and the effect that kind of thing had on people? He ALWAYS HAD THAT. Everyone, even the narration, would have you believe so many of his fantastic, thoughtful, insightful qualities, were the result of “learning something” where he used to be naïve.
Meeting a young Xie Lian who was not only less naïve than anyone else had told you, but also not nearly as naïve as even Xie Lian has been indicating himself? Narrative-shaping right there.
There had already been implications in book 1 that Xie Lian wasn’t ok and that not reacting to pain was ultimately going to be more about trauma than the comedy Xie Lian has learned to try and make it, but realizing that he’s learned to make fun of himself on an ideological level? In addition to on a physical one?
THAT was the point I sat up and went “oh, something is going to go WRONG wrong here in this flashback. There is SOMETHING ELSE going on here.”
And then the whole flashback and major portions of book 3 and basically the rest of the novel was more or less about the disconnect between the official story/the version of you known to the public, and the true/private you. For our main characters both, and many, many side characters as well.
We even do this in BOTH FLASHBACKS. The contrast is even more stark, in the second, between the actual circumstances and motivations behind Xie Lian’s banishment, and the neat, comfortable, easily-digested version that most of heaven accepted for centuries.
And then after everything, we END the novel on “what legend says about these characters/gods” as in, the story commonly told by people who don’t know all the details. You know, a parallel bookend to the prologue. In case it wasn’t already clear that that’s the type of unreliable version of the story the introduction was.
The fact that learning the *real* story via flashback so dramatically overturns our initial impressions and operating understanding of the story — learning that we also, the reader, have been susceptible to the in-narrative propaganda and the simplest assumptions — is such a huge part of this book, structurally and thematically, to me.
One of the best examples of this is that the fandom insists that Xie Lian's lesson to learn was that he 'couldn't save everyone' and I kid you not like- The prologue goes:
And the actual scene goes:
the absolute difference in sentiment and tone and theme and message in both of these scenes are the biggest clue in on the fact that.... you really should put any stock in the prologue as a real indicator of Xie Lian's actions and the course of the fall of Xianle at all.
this comic is really good

Saezuru News - Volume 10 release / Pop-Up Cafe and Volume 11 begins!
Did we ever think we’d get to Volume 11? The Volume 10 release will be October 1 and will release just one day after the beginning of Volume 11 with chapter 67 coming out September 29 or 30. The Pop-up collab cafe will be on October 1st as well. We can usually expect merch and a whirlwind Winter leading up to the Spring release (probably March) of the Volume 10 Drama CD!
Chapter 67 will have color pages which is always the marker for a new volume, and we are due for a cover at sometime in the new year!!
So you don’t forget where we left off:
LET’S GOOOOO!!!!!
Saezuru chapter 67 confirmed for the next issue on 30/09! 🎉
That was quicker than expected, thankfully.

This is not a in the heat of the moment kiss. This is a kiss that says I love and recognize your love. Taking Doumeki's bruised and battered face gently in his hands. This is so important to this relationship, the recognition. Yashiro now realizes not showing his love has caused the things he didn't want to happen. There will be no turning back.
This story has been part of my life for a long while and really I wish it never stops. When we have pauses like this at first I feel sad but now I think the longer things take the longer it will be around. I am so obsessed with these two that I will hang on to the end no matter how long it takes. Sensei take your time. This story cannot be rushed. You have written a masterpiece of love, pain and redemption and rushing it will do it a disservice. I look forward to however long we have with this story. ♥️

Heaven Official’s Blessing (Tian Guan Ci Fu)- vol. 5
I know my Saezuru posts probably come across as silly or just entertainment. And I probably look like a complete clown to some people. It's ok, no problem. But I'd like to share what this story actually means to me.
It all started years ago during a summer vacation from work. I decided to spend that time by myself, doing the few things that were still capable of bringing me joy: watching anime and reading manga. Like many of you, I found the anime first. And after that ending… of course I immediately went looking for the manga so I could continue the story.
I devoured it day and night. I kept rereading the scenes that touched me the most, over and over again. And as you all know, this manga has plenty of those moments. When I reached the latest chapter, I simply started over. Then I reread it again. And again. To give you an idea of how bad it got, I reread it so often that I would barely even notice when a new chapter had been released.
Why did this happen? Why this story? Because the author genuinely cares about it. Because Yoneda Kou treats this story as her story, not as something built around fan expectations. That's why every little detail matters. The narrative is crafted so carefully that whenever you think, "But why is it like this?" sooner or later the answer comes, and your reaction becomes, "Oh… that's why." I accept everything the author chooses to give us because I'm here to follow these characters' lives, not to control them. I trust Yoneda Kou so much that I let her take me by the hand and lead me through this story.
I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but I understand Yashiro and Doumeki: their feelings, their choices, their flaws. I don't need them to be perfect or to behave the way I want them to. I'm a reader. I'm here to witness their story, not decide it.
Have there been moments I hated? Yes. There's one chapter that I hate with every fiber of my being. But that hatred isn't directed at the writing, it's directed entirely at the emotions it forces me to feel. Well… and at one particular character. You all know exactly who I'm talking about. Maybe one day I'll make a whole post about that chapter.
But even that chapter made me feel something. Exactly what a story is supposed to make its reader feel. And if a work makes you want to savor every tiny detail… isn't that the mark of a masterpiece?
Going back to the beginning of this little ramble, I can keep digging deeper and deeper into this story, and every time I discover something new. That's what keeps me waiting so eagerly for every new chapter. It's the only manga I keep up with as it's being released. Not because other manga aren't worth it, but because I'm the kind of dummy who easily forgets what happened in previous chapters. That never happens with Saezuru.
Because every single detail matters, and every one of them gets filed away somewhere in my brain under "the story that keeps my serotonin alive."
I don't see a clown but I do see a very much devoted fan 🥰
