What did Inoue mean by this

(I know what he meant by this, don't worry.)

The context is a woman sitting for a portrait and she and the artist fall in love with each other.

I love Inoue's characters best when he's writing about art and artists (which he does a lot, so yay!), as he seems to be a guy who is just infatuated with creating and connecting through that process. And "process" is an important word here, because I think that's the thing about art he loves best, not some product.

I think a lot about how Otoya and Maya fall in love making the Bloody Rose violin in Kamen Rider Kiva. Sure, it's Otoya's playing that gets Maya's attention, but it's the crafting of that instrument that really seals their relationship (and takes on the weight of an affair that pushes Yuri out of Otoya's life).

The artist in this Donbrother's episode dies, and his final wish is for the woman to burn the painting he made of her, as he felt it could never convey his full feelings of love for the woman. It was the process, not the product, where that love was found.

I adore that sentiment. And I love how Inoue conceives of art as this deeply personal, emotional, romantic, and sensual endeavor.

So she actually said that she does not see the appeal in Senshi at all and that the panty shots weren't intended to be horny - she just has a neighbor who looks kind of like him and does laundry in his underwear. Which she finds kind of weird and offputting, and put into his character to be funny.

But that's the thing. She doesn't exaggerate or grotesqueify or alter people's bodies to fit some standard. (Except insofar as she draws different species differently, and those are exquisitely practiced to ensure they have the same diversity of appearances that humans do.) She just presents people exactly as they are, complexities and oddities and all.

It just so happens that when you present people exactly as they are, what you present will be beautiful and alluring to many. Even the things you yourself might find weird and offputting. Honestly I think it's a touching example of how you don't have to see the beauty in everyone for the beauty to be there, simple honesty is enough to let the wonder of people's humanity shine through.

This is actually such a crucial part of healing from neglect and abuse and I have to add to this.

Because indeed, people who like you will not roll their eyes and sigh at the idea of accommodating your needs, they will value your voice and be upset with you about injustice done to you, not at you for "being difficult". They will be happy when you find a way to live a better life, and help you to get there. If you are struggling, someone who loves you wants to see you smile, not tell you to smile because "you have it so good".

Donbrothers episode 24 check-in.

Inoue is a master at putting people in situations. Which is fantastic for the time of put-your-Sentai-team-into-situations-time that is summer! Just so many situations, such as curse your dog-themed-guy into becoming a dog and a sadly sweet episode of a ghost girl.

...oh yeah we have a sixth ranger now too. Somehow I find the actor extremely adorable, he plays the "nice" side well. And the feral side too, love seeing the switch-up. Love that he's fitting in as well as a peacock amongst songbirds.

Kamen rider kiva?

Oooo, what an interesting choice for the ask game.

Favourite hero

It's a choice between Wataru for his growth into Kiva... or just going with my heart and saying Yuri and Megumi for even if their wins are rare, I'm still thinking of that Rook win across time episode.

Favourite villain

Oh I think that has to be the Rhinoceros Fangire. The one that scouts out people chasing their dreams, steals their money, and then takes their souls when they begin to get really antsy. That was just a good antagonist for a set of episodes.

Favourite non-transforming character

My immediate thought was the girl who got "tutored" by Otoya/was a mentor to Wataru in a depressive funk. Mami Kurasawa, that's the girl! Another excellent set of episodes there.

Favourite suit

Oh this is a series full of excellent suits and base Kiva is a standout. But I really have to give it to the stained-glass aesthetic of the Fangires. Pearlshell Fangire is so beautiful too. Slightly prefer Mio's blue over Maya's pink coloration.

Favourite robot

...does the transformation trinkets count? If so, I'm going with the dad that stepped up, Kivat-the-Third.

Favourite song

Kiva has such a fun soundtrack but I got to give it to the opening Break the Chain as it was very much the lure that brought me into this show in the first place. It also has a cool violin solo in it's full version! Favourite episode

Since I alluded to it before, Yuri and Megumi's win against Rook is the episode that sticks the most in my mind because I really wasn't expecting something like that to actually happen for those two at the start. But thank goodness the two got to earn that win across time.

Any fun headcanons

Eh, not really. All I got is that I don't think Nago and Megumi are going to last long but that's not exactly fun so to speak. I definitely ship Yuri/Maya though and wish they could have been co-mothers together.
