Since I’m bored out of my mind and have nothing else to currently over-analyze, let me talk about Season 3 and dancing. Because there is a lot of dancing and it’s such a strong motive because of that, so it has to be significant. Especially if Davenzi are really gonna recreate the dance scene from Only Lovers Left Alive….but I’m getting ahead of myself.

So, the first time dancing plays a role is in the very first clip of S3, where there is a party and Matteo doesn’t dance. He sits on the couch, isolated from everyone. He later gets up and “dances” with Sara, but that’s mostly him putting his head on her shoulder and barely moving to the music. And he quickly leaves to go hang out with the guys in the bathroom.

Meanwhile Hans is all about dancing on his social media. He’s really into voguing and the whole Ball scene (and here I could go on and on about how I think that might play into a trans story-line) but sufficient to say that not only is that dancing, but a type of dance associated with gay culture. And Hans loves it. It’s part of his self-expression and it brings him joy.

There’s also the matter of Carlos and dancing. When they’re watching the girls dance, he mentions that after having seen that he wants to dance, and later Kiki is trying to teach him some ballet moves. It’s something they can bond over and that they’re having fun with. It’s also not the most “masculine” of dances and Carlos still trying it in a public space just really makes me happy because it speaks of his emotional maturity and his comfort with his own masculinity. But I digress.

All this leads me to the end of episode 3. Again there is a party, and again Matteo isn’t dancing. He sits around, “makes out” with Sara for a bit, and then is standing around, barely talking to anyone. And then Hans and his friends make their grand entrance. Everyone else is dancing and having fun and then Hans goes up to him and pulls Matteo on the dancefloor with the words “You don’t dance enough”. And then Matteo tries, but he’s still cautious. It’s all okay until Andi gets to close and puts his hands on Matteo’s hips, somewhere between being flirty and just dancing. And then Matteo freaks out and runs away.

So, Matteo doesn’t dance because it makes him uncomfortable, especially like with Andi where he probably felt like people would be able to tell that he’s gay just from his dancing. He doesn’t allow himself to express himself through dance, isolating himself further. He’s scared of taking up space and of losing control over what people think for just a second, and he’s not part of things. Which means if they recreate the Only Lovers Left Alive dance scene it’s not only going to be significant because this is David’s favorite movie, but also because Matteo is going to dance. Which means he feels comfortable enough around David to express himself in a way that he normally doesn’t, and he’s gonna touch David and connect with him and stop worrying for just a second. And it’s gonna be so, so good for him and hopefully lead to more dancing in the future. (Personally I would love for a scene where he hangs out with Hans and his friends and tries voguing - not taking it too serious and just having fun with it - but that might just be me)
