HOWEVER.

A serious fuckton of skill, materials, and energy go into the glasses that me and my entire family wears. Grinding the right lenses, fitting them into frames, not to mention going to school for ophthalmology to correctly diagnose and treat vision problems…these are skills that take a lot of intelligence and manual dexterity, plus years of training, to learn how to do correctly. Shouldn’t the people who devote their lives to developing those skills be fairly compensated?

Same with the doctors, nurses, and pharmacists who diagnosed and treated my brother when he developed diabetes. I think insulin should be AFFORDABLE, no question about it. Everyone who needs insulin should be able to access it. But it’s no good if it doesn’t meet a consistent quality standard. If the people formulating medical insulin and making syringes and distributing pumps and other technologies are paid well and appreciated for their specialized training, they’re more likely to do a good job.

things have happened

my dog sat very politely for a stranger

delighting him, although he did not give her the rest of his burrito

as she intended

and I saw a juvenile snapping turtle

while riding my bike near a pond where, a year or two ago,

I also saw a snapping turtle

(remembering the exact locations where I have seen reptiles is one of my superpowers)

and because I am a creature of threes,

a third lovely thing:

the person I love best in the world

to promise them I will still be here tomorrow

for bike rides, and turtles, and dogs’ birthdays
