"Just as one can wage an armed struggle without carrying out a revolution, one can also learn without educating oneself in a revolutionary way. We do not want to form an educated elite at the service of an exploitative group. We do not want science to be used to enrich a minority, oppress man and stifle the creative initiative of the masses, the inexhaustible source of collective progress. Each of us must assume his revolutionary responsibilities in education, regarding books, study, as tools at the exclusive service of the masses. Studying must be seen as a revolutionary task to be combined with the revolutionary tasks of production and fighting. He who studies should be like a spark lighting the flame which is the people."
Samora Machel, Speech at the Second Conference of the Department of Education and Culture (1970)
If criminals don't get to have human rights, then the people in charge of deciding what a criminal is get to decide who is and is not human. Do you understand? Is this not blindingly obvious? Do you care?
Or do you assume you will always be "one of the good ones"?
I once ate meat from a pig that was only fed wine corks during its life. I became nauseated and tired and fell asleep in my leather armchair. I dreamt of cool breezes over vineyards on the Mediterranean Sea, until I woke up in a cold sweat and a longing for Italy. It’s not right to feed a pig too much of something, it gives them a connection which is best left alone.
I’m sorry you confused assigning morality with analysis but I think it explains why you can’t genuinely participate whenever the conversation steps outside the realm of “is this sinful or not” and why you immediately assume that any form of deeper analysis secretly is “is this sinful or not”
also explains why you’re able to go along with things that betray your values so deeply: you don’t want to assign morality, so it suspends your ability to use any analysis whatsoever. all someone has to do is cry about being seen as a bad person and you lose your analytical footing.
sad!
on the other hand: the niggling suspicion that you don’t actually have consistent coherent beliefs on this topic and are more of an emotional weathervane that can be pulled in any direction that leverages enough guilt and sentimentality has proved correct and I am grateful for that.

people who tell you to stop reading the news to "regulate your nervous system" do not have your best interests at heart. if following current events makes you spiral you probably need a better analytical frame, not less information
and the analytical frame you need is probably dialectical materialism
i'm totally crazy, i freak out all the time, but you know what helps me most? learning. reading. studying. discussing. sometimes you do need a nap, but sometimes you need a conversation with someone more knowledgeable/experienced, or a day at the (physical or digital) library. and really i think everyone has a different baseline emotional register that's best for them and their circumstances, but i recommend aiming to feel solid and anchored, not necessarily "calm." of course we won't feel "calm" after reading about genocide. but if we approach what we're reading correctly, it can strengthen our resolve; feed our fighting spirit; show us paths to liberation. a lot of people in my life have diagnosed me with "revolutionary optimism" and wonder how i maintain that mindset but i'm not an optimist by nature, it all comes from studying
#tempted 2 send this to the person (anarchist) #who yesterday said they 'are too stressed to hear about the war' and 'don't need to read theory to know right from wrong' #which i only mention because it's a complete validation of op's hypothesis lmao (albeit anecdotal)
if you send them anything, make it oppose book worship
but what i wish i could tell them is that theory isn't about knowing right from wrong. theory should do two things: - analyze some aspect of our shared reality - propose a course of action to change that reality has our anarchist friend ever compared the merits of different forms of protest? or discussed the nature of gender? have they criticized far right ideology? have they said acab? all of this is theory. we all do theory. our theory is whatever ideas inform the practical choices we make. that means if our theory isn't sound, our actions will be ineffective. so we have a responsibility to study and not base our actions on uninvestigated assumptions.
it would be convenient if we could all look at the world and see everything exactly as it is in all its complexity. but our viewpoint is necessarily limited; we only see what's right in front of us, we don't see it from all sides, and we might see only its superficial aspect and not the internal systems driving it. one reason i love dialectical materialism is that it acknowledges these limitations, and teaches us to investigate beyond our own immediate perspectives and gather the broadest possible range of viewpoints to get an accurate picture of reality.
what happens if our anarchist believes something is right, but their comrade thinks it's wrong? either they split up (fragmenting the movement over a potentially resolvable disagreement), or they engage in line struggle, which is theory. disagreements are inevitable because again, we all have different perspectives. if we want to be effective revolutionaries, we can't just try to validate our own beliefs. the goal should be accurate analysis, because without an accurate understanding of the world, we won't know how to change it.
sure the war is "stressful." you could say i'm "stressed" that my homeland is facing genocidal annihilation. but if i want a better world, first i have to face the world as it is. so even if escapism were an option for me psychologically (and it's really taken off the table when "the horrors" are personal), i wouldn't want to retreat into it, because i want to fight back. if our anarchist friends have any will to fight, they need to make the effort to understand what we're fighting

sentiments like "kill all white people" or "kill all men" or "eat the rich" are so pathetically harmless that getting mad about them makes you look like an idiot. like a. they're never going to happen and b. those categories don't exist as like, an irrefutable fact of life that can't be changed; they're social categories that only exist in opposition to those designated as outside of the category. There are not roving gangs of BLM activitists or femnazis or poor people carrying pitchforks and torches and dragging white people/men/rich people out of their homes and killing them in the streets. And failing that, there's no like, coherent to that being something that happens in society. Mass violence is always enacted against minorities and vulnerable people - taking 'kill all white people' seriously makes you sound like a conservative buying into the great replacement bullshit. Its not gonna happen and you're a pathetic loser for thinking it will.

just to add onto this, every single Apollo astronaut was a military pilot, and many of them, including neil armstrong, flew combat missions over Korea. NASA has heavily recruited military pilots since the beginning of its existence, and the vast majority of astronauts even today have a military background. despite nominally existing as a civilian organization, NASA is a de facto branch of the military.
this is the core of why some women defend beauty standards - if they’re deconstructed even a little they have to face how much money/time they’ve sunk into them. it also exposes how untrue “i did it for myself” really is - if that was true, you wouldn’t be upset that other bodies are being uplifted

During the War on Terror, under the Obama administration, the US carried out bombing campaigns across multiple countries in West Asia, while funding for PBS remained steady at roughly $430 million a year.
So let’s be honest: if Trump had kept funding institutions like PBS at that same level, would you actually care about the violence the US is carrying out today or would you just go on with your day because PBS and NASA are comfortably funded?
Do you get what I’m saying? Do you see why this kind of thing bothers non-Americans?
DON'T ASK YOURSELF "AM I A GOOD PERSON?" ASK YOURSELF "IS WHAT I AM DOING GOOD?" OR EVEN! "WHAT'S A GOOD THING I CAN DO RIGHT NOW?"
DON'T WORRY ABOUT JUDGING AND SORTING YOURSELF! JUST MAKE YOUR BEST CHOICES!!
Ok but pls actually do this people. There is no such thing as a good person. Stop trying to be one and starting trying to do good instead
