My weird hypothesis is that sex essentialism (and bio-essentialism in general) is an attempt to reconstruct 7-day creationism in a secular world where evolutionary science has disproven it. Biology is WAY more mutable than many people assume, and sex essentialism mirrors the creationist idea that all species and bodies are fixed in time. That they are machines with a proper functioning rather than dynamic beings in a constantly changing and adapting natural world.
“You shouldn’t can’t change the body nature gave you” is just the new “you shouldn’t can’t change how God made you.” Attempting to moralize normality leads nowhere but cruelty and dehumanization.
You say “you can’t change nature” and I’ll just tell you “change IS nature.”
