Wesele, 1972

Some Wesele illustrations, both in original Polish and with an English translation. Although I don’t like the play’s moral, I like its concept a lot : D

In case anyone who isn’t Polish is curious: the play is centered around a wedding between someone from a upper and someone from a lower class. The couple jokingly invite a straw-wrap to their wedding, and since then various guests are haunted by historical figures. I didn’t illustrate all of the ghosts (for example, I left out the most famous one - Stańczyk - for no particular reason, just that he speaks a lot and it’s difficult to fit his text in a speech bubble lol) but the ones I illustrated are:

Zawisza Czarny, a famous undefeated knight, a hero of the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, symbolises honor and Poland’s former military prowess

Ludwik de Laveaux, a Romantic era painter, symbolises love

Wernyhora, a Cossack bard, legends say he prophetized the partitions and eventual independence of Poland. In the play he pushes the guests to an uprising for national liberation.
