JACK LOWDEN as River Cartwright in Slow Horses 4.01
Let's just get this straight: River is way more dangerous than anyone gives him credit for, and Season 5 really leans into how misunderstood he is, both by the other characters and even some of the fandom itself.
The "I'm really good" line is cocky and arrogant, but that's not him bragging. River needs to believe he can survive in a world that's slowly crushing him, that he's not powerless or stuck even when everything in his life is falling apart.
He's always been competent with a gun, which is impressive considering he's had almost no training outside the few moments we see him actually shoot. He doesn't have a range he regularly visits, like book!Marcus, he's not a gun-nut, but the shot in Season 5 to save Whelan? That was good. Not even a shot aiming for centre mass, but a clean headshot.
And remember, this is River who vomits at the sight of blood and gore, even when he's the cause of it! And here he is, calm and composed, shooting the target to protect Whelan without even pausing. That's growth. That's my baby becoming an even better spy.
Sure, he messes up. The accident with Gimball, and Shirley, and Louisa is all examples of River fumbling hard. Missing parts of the plan until he speaks with the O.B. He mishandles the major rescue, he dismisses the destabilisation plan for ages.
He's human, he's fallible, he's chaos-incarnate, but that doesn't mean he's not effective, or clever. He's still a formidable agent, still adapting and surviving and he has no one to help him. This man has no friends outside Louisa, no family outside the O.B. and a psychotic dad who tried to murder him. His half brother murdered his colleague and his other colleague murdered that same brother. He blew off the face of one of his other brothers. River's life is objectively horrific. And yet somehow, he keeps surviving.
Like yes, River is a fucking mess and a half, but he's become a different beast in s5, and its interesting how much the over-eager spy chipper spy has disappeared beneath this new spiky River. River isn't "enjoyable" or "acceptable" as a victim. His trauma shows up in anger and irritability with his colleagues, sarcasm and arrogance with everyone, and yeah, that makes him hard to like sometimes. But that doesn't mean he's unworthy of sympathy.
The one glimmer of hope at the end of the season, River returning to the Park, excitedly calling Louisa, thinking he's back and never realising he's stuck so long as Taverner's in charge, and Louisa wanting to sever ties because she's scared of her own feelings. That's so damn heartbreaking.
And I do wonder how much of that is the reaction to Patrice and Frank, how much of River improving as a killer is him turning himself into a weapon after the attacks. River, who isn't eating properly, who is training himself, closing himself off, and finding himself in the violence. River, who asks Lamb for orders he can follow, who needs direction, a win under his belt and blood on his hands, to feel good again. He's messy and sometimes cruel, he's a sarcastic shit and a bit of a cunt, but he's clever and dangerous and he deserves the recognition for that.

I'm probably the only one who likes River's negative character development, for the sake of angst :)
He's so much not coping, with not a single person he can call and talk to, that he's bitter and angry and snapping at everyone and desperate to be useful, be active, be wanted, but feeling useless and helpless instead. Lamb doesn't even have to say nasty things to him anymore (at least not all the time): River can say them aloud himself because they're in his head anyway.
You don't want me here and I don't want to be here.
Life is a can of pink paint falling from a scaffold: absurd, tarnishing, unpredictable, something he has no control of.
Being basically called a 'good boy' by Whelan sends him reeling because finally, finally someone thinks he's not a failure. He's really fucking good. Maybe if he repeats that again and again, he'll believe it too.

River Cartwright is a fuck up. He is over-confident and too eager and starry-eyed. He races into situations face first without thinking three steps ahead. He's really bad at following orders.
But he's also clever. He's intuitive. He's quick on his feet. He's very capable physically and psychologically as an agent. He knows what to do in a bad situation, he doesn't freeze, he doesn't back down. When Lamb trusts him with a job, he damn well does it and does it well. He will back up his fellow agents, he'll protect them, he'll throw himself under the bus for them.
River thinks he's Jame Bond, but he's not, and that's the delightful part. River isn't smooth with women, but he's respectful and not pushy or amorous. He doesn't encroach on boundaries or try to fuck everyone he meets. Yes, he jumps into a fight and fuck the consequences, but unlike Bond or Bauer or whoever, it never ends well for River. Reality always kicks in.
And that's the awful part. River's life is dramatic irony 101, he doesn't realise his life isn't a movie, or one of the O.B.'s stories (even the O.B.'s stories aren't wholly accurate to real life considering how he edits what he tells River).
River is Hamlet - he thinks he's in one genre and a certain type of hero, but he's really the other, and that's what's so amusing and devastating. Any other story, River would be the clear hero, cutting through bad guys and saving the day, hang the consequences. But he's not, it's not, and that's the beautiful tragedy of it all.

Goth is Apolitical
I keep seeing discussions around this in my social feeds, often from what Iād call 'online goths' selling their 'gothhood' for referral links, content clicks, and monetization. So hereās my take on it, to organize my thoughts and have a reference point going forward. Goth as a subculture is inherently apolitical. There is no "political party line" and the point and goal of goth is not politics. Goth is an inward-facing subculture, not an outward facing subculture.
Many goths do individually tend to lean towards certain politics more than others, but that stems from personal world views and not a subcultural guideline.
What unites truegoths⢠(I say with a joking wink), whether they lean politically right (e.g. certain neopagan circles), centrist, or left (e.g. post-punk communities), is not a shared ideology but a shared stance. Most, especially in trad goth spaces, are effectively apolitical while practicing inclusive personal values. What binds them are two broad philosophical pillars:
They look inward more than outward and distance themselves from the loud, consumerist, commercial noise of mainstream society.
They are deeply distrustful/skeptical of authority/authoritarianism.
Certain behaviours and social preferences naturally evolve from these 2 core pillars, but often get conflated with political ambitions.
If you strip away the commercial and socially performing aspect of mainstream every day society, you are left facing death and meaning. Goth art, music, lifestyle reflects these inward considerations. These two pillars are the reason, why a lot of goths tend to be into
dark monotone music (refusing fake feel-good-performance, stripped and raw, for processing internally)
literature/poetry/magic/spirituality/occultism (find meaning in life & death, beauty in ruin, what lies behind mainstream polished flashy life)
morbid things (skulls, serial killers, psychology - the truth behind distractions)
DIY (refusing shallow commercial hype and money-focused living, not as a political rebellion but as a result of your own value of anti-commercialism)
black (minimalist, refusing loud colourful performance and expression for others, connotation of "mourning")
Thereās a common claim that āyouāre goth if you listen to the musicā which gravely oversimplifies the relationship. Itās not about which bands you like, but why youāre drawn to that music in the first place. Goth music isnāt just a genre for dancing or aesthetic vibes but the sonic expression of this particular worldview.
Goths (as opposed to the TikTok and Instagram goths) donāt listen to these bands because theyāre catchy or something. They resonate with the emotional and philosophical tone behind the music: alienation, loss, decay, beauty in darkness, the refusal of false positivity. The sound reflects an internal state. You donāt get into goth because you found a playlist, you find the music because you were already there internally. I feel this horse is getting saddled the wrong way around more often than not these days.
And it's a crucial distinction. You donāt adopt goth because you heard The Sisters of Mercy. You found The Sisters of Mercy because something in you already matched them.
Many subcultures function around a POV of "look at me, make space for me". Goth functions around "just leave me alone". It's a culture of loners aesthetically and philosophically dealing with the rot in the world internally, not one of groups shouting how things are bad and need changing.
Goth has no ambition to change society or culture and runs on "leave me alone, I'll do the same for you".
This naturally makes modern day social media goths and Killstar VIP buyers exactly that thing that was the worst insult back in the day of an actual IRL scene: "posers".
Just as the worst insult for any band used to be: "commercial" and there was always much discussion about who is "selling out".
I feel a lot of younger people, especially in the hypercommercialized social landscape of 2025, struggle with these concepts. People are so used to buying visual identities without grasping the essence, there is significant lack of awareness how things like selling and buying shirts with comic bats and pentagram prints is mockery and offensive commodification of what used to be a subculture.
Most lifelong goths 35-80 still actively attend concerts, poetry readings, small scene events and go to spaces where the original energy of the subculture can still be felt. But as I have heard more often than not over the last years when visiting concerts or going to local clubs or meet-ups: many elder goths have withdrawn from the established and big European festivals over the years because they feel what were once gatherings of like-minded outsiders have become over-commercialized carnivals: platforms for cosplay-level attention-seeking and the commodification of goth aesthetics by people who treat it like a seasonal costume rather than a lived philosophy. Goth isn't about buying and selling spooky products and fetish underwear pics while arguing over politics. It's about looking inward for meaning and refusing to perform for a world you never asked to be part of.
