i’m just saying that the first time wwx heard it was while he was slipping away in a dark cave with nothing but lwj’s voice to hold onto.

but regardless, he misses, on purpose - jiang cheng may not be a perfect swordsman like his brother but he Is very good, and if he had wanted his blow to hit, it would have - and wei wuxians smile is matched with jiang chengs look of horror as he falls. wei wuxian would have sent himself plummeting anyway, but this is one last sacrifice, his final act, and it is jiang chengs fault, if this does not end well it is jiang chengs fault. he can only hope that he will find wei wuxian, alive, at the bottom of that cliff, that his brother will have achieved the impossible just one more time. we all believe our older siblings are invincible until, to our grief and horror, they prove us wrong

jiang cheng only finds chenqing at the bottom of that cliff, no wei wuxian, no brother, not even a body to mourn. and whether he thought he was helping or whether it was some terrible mistake, a crime of violent impulse and fury, jiang cheng has committed some awful atrocity either way. and I think it probably fucked with jiang cheng that wei wuxians last words were his name, not said with anger or hatred or disappointment, not in the way that jiang cheng had said his, but said how his brother had always said it - with love and care and warmth. he doesn't think he deserves it. the gift or the honor or whatever it was

and then 16 years later jiang cheng finds his brother, always so impossible, back from the dead, and some kid from the lan sect looks him in the eyes and says, "people say you killed him yourself"  like it's the simplest, truest thing in the world. and jiang cheng makes such a horrified face again, only slightly more contained than the one he had made on the cliff all those years ago
