it hurts him to see her in the kitchen cooking to feed his bros, because he's an honorable period man, and though having been poor, he doesn't see the poor as dirt, class is still engrained in him. he disdains the frivolities of the rich, but he still wants to give his upper-class-born wife that upper class life
so when sanniang encourages him to just marry her, notice how he says first she doesn't see marriage as more than a business partnership
...and you think this means he's waiting for her to love him. but actually, he says he already knows she has feelings for him, though she might not be very consciously aware:

Lady Zuo scares me so I'm glad she's finally gone, but it's just. it's just all around tragic. Her circumstances that led her to the point of no return. Her burden of caring for a useless brother that she unfortunately needed (he was a man who could potentially lift them from their status) but she did love him, yes, even though he only ever gave her disappointment and heartbreak. And he was a pathetic man but he was also a pawn for others. They caused so much harm. They were also tragic.
OH shit, zhao ling actually killed him!!!!! Like usually they make the male lead hold back, so I truly didn't expect that. The satisfaction felt so good!!!!
