this is mostly funny to me bc it’s made very clear that the ninth house, as focused as it is on survival, does not operate by the same social rules/expectations as the other houses:

like it is fully established that the ninth house has No Chill and that gideon has been taught to fight for survival, while the other cavaliers primary have been taught to duel for sport.

if ya think about it, Jeannemary pulling out her rapier after the Cam v Marta duel saved Naberius’ ass by giving him an out. Set to face Gideon and the way she fights, there’s no doubt him and the floor were about to become best buddies. Given the rules, and one caveat being it was until the mercy call, you can’t tell me that Babs wasn’t in for one hell of a pasting, ( If he was, at most, looking at a new career as a colander and, at least, looking at broken bones. ) possibly even mortally wounded, waiting upon the grace of a nun with no chill and a penchant for dramatique timing. You can’t tell me that Harrow and Ianthe Tridentarius wouldn’t be coolly looking each other in the eye across the room waiting to see who blinked first, casually ignoring Bab’s bleating (and most definitely shitting his pants) on the floor. The only reason why Ianthe might consider conceding would be because she needed that hunk of man meat for her later banquet – and he’d be no good to her dead or out of commission: sulking under a blanket in their rooms. I’m willing to put money on as soon as he left that room he was shaking like a leaf and drenched in fear sweat. (He ought be grovelling and thanking Jeannemary.)

Personally I no longer believe it was an actual gun, since Wake’s use of a gun is so surprising to everyone in HTN (and the narration does call it a gun, not “powder”). However, I don’t think it was pocket sand either, since that is silly and underhanded and does not meet Harrow’s requirements for ominous drama (she wanted Gideon to learn how to twirl around a chain! in a matter of weeks!). Like if knuckle-knives are barbarian, how much worse is pocket sand? Duels are shown to be highly ritualized and throwing powder in someone’s eyes is just not the kind of thing that legitimizes one’s victory.

On the other hand, some people in the notes are very convinced that since “ninth cavs are necro suitcases,” the “powder” referred to must be bone powder. Personally I don’t like this answer either because an offhand is something a cavalier uses in a duel, and the way we are shown duels in the series, they are not fought as a necro-cav duo but rather cav-vs.-cav. So it just wouldn’t make sense for Gideon to carry something only a necro could use as her dueling offhand. (Also I don’t think we ever see Harrow use bone powder for anything. What is she gonna do with powder when she can spring a whole skeleton from a molar? It just doesn’t seem like an efficient tool for a bone magician of Harrow’s caliber.)

Anyways, you didn’t ask for this long-ass reply to your funny gif but I get similar notes on this post frequently enough that I wanted to expound on it. So thank you for the opportunity!

Someday I will meet Tazmuir and ask her what the hell she meant by “powder,” just so I can come back and report it to everyone who has “well, actually”ed me on this post. For now, I don’t like any of the options I’ve heard, so I choose to believe that actually Harrow was referring to PROTEIN powder. In a duel, Gideon would politely hold a hand up for a pause, mix herself up a protein shake, chug it, unpause, and then go to town on Babs’s ass, with the power of protein powder coursing through her veins. This clearly & obviously makes the most sense. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk

I’m sorry, but I simply refuse to believe that “powder” here means anything but blackpowder. “gun and rapier” is, after all, a very common (and actually historical!) combination of weapons, and both are real duelling weapons. I doubt it would be a modern gun, more like a flintlock, the sort of gun most contemporary to the nine houses’ general martial style. Would it be archaic? Probably, but they are already in the deepest catacombs of the ninth, digging up ancient antiques. Harrow’s goal is to maintain the outward appearance of the ninth house, and having a cav with an ancient-but-technically-legal weapon fits the ninth’s obsession with the past perfectly.

A convincing argument from Team Gun!!!! Very good point about the Ninth antiques. Also Harrow does talk Like That so it would be in character for her to use a poetical term for a weapon rather than a technical name.

I do agree there is significantly more support in the story + context for “gun” than there is for any of the other options. One thing that’s been making me question, though, is this bit from GTN, when Gideon and Harrow are investigating G1deon and Pyrrha’s lyctor study:

So if the Ninth House does have very old guns on the premises, they are apparently keeping them stashed away deep.

Alternately it could be that a carbine is different enough that Gideon is mentally filing it as its own thing (i.e., she’s seen other guns, but only ever seen this type in pictures).

microsoft will try and convince you that you have to 'upgrade' to windows 11, but a lot of people may not have computers capable of that, or just may not want to, seeing as how windows 11 is a piece of shit isn't everyone's favourite

but you can't just keep running windows 10, once it stops getting security patches it will leave you vulnerable to all kinds of stuff you're usually protected from

changing operating system can sound scary, and you might have heard stories about linux being hard to use in the past, but the community has put in a lot of effort over recent years to improve it, and there are now popular and well supported options for users coming from windows who want to basically continue as they have been, but away from microsoft's influence.

plus steam/valve have put in a huge amount of work to make games easy to play on linux, because under the hood the steamdeck is a linux device, so for most games now all you have to do is tick one checkbox in the game properties on steam and it Just Works.
