Most do, but there are a lot of people in the fandom that I don't think read much, so they often think references Matt has made to other things are actually new to the book. You'll frequently see posts by people newly discovering some thing that existed long before DCC and being excited that someone is referencing the books 😭

That tracks - I've had a couple conversations with folks who said they didn't read for fun until DCC. It's great that the story appeals to so many folks and provides a positive, engaging experience. I hope it can be an entry point and not an exception!

i must say, i am a huge fan of when a book is in the middle of a very exciting plot containing many interesting problems when out of nowhere for a few pages it's like, "hey by the way, real quick, here's a detailed explanation of the city's water filtration system! i'm telling you this for a reason and you should worry about it. anyway! haha okay back to the plot" and you just get to be Scared for a while

Is it a shallow and basic reading to point to "Pyrrh-"s and be like "that's it for sure," yes. Does it feel right, also yes

in a way john watson is a fantasy (what if you had this brilliant enigmatic friend and what if he liked you in particular and what if he offered you the excitement of youth and adventures and a way out of boring society life and all without having to actually give up your status as a gentleman so you could have the best of both worlds) and in a way sherlock holmes is a fantasy (what if someone never got tired of you despite your various strange habits and mood swings and instead of simply tolerating you they genuinely liked you and what if you didn’t have to live alone forever and what if you never had to give up doing the things you love) and of course there’s the most fantastical part of it all (what if you could afford london housing prices)
