This the kinda bullshit why I'm not coming back to tumblr, but I made a Mastodon if people want to actually be friendly and not bully.

I know Mastodon can be kind of intimidating and I'm still figuring it out. As far as I can tell, it doesn't matter at all which server you sign up with, because they all talk to each other. However some of them have different rules, so if you intend to post certain content, just double check that. Mastodon.social is The Big Server everyone goes to, but it's getting whacked with twitter refugees, so it doesn't have open signups right now. Which server you sign up in decides which public posts you see on the timeline/explore tab. If you only care about seeing people you follow, then it doesn't change anything. You're also not locked into a server and it looks like it's pretty easy to migrate your account to a different one or make a linked account on other servers if you want to be in more than one for some reason.
File attachments/uploads seem marginally better than Twitter. That's good. No costs. No ads. No algorithm.
One last note: Twidere is a cool android app that you can use for Twitter. It lets you use Twitter without ads, algorithms, caches deleted posts, chronological timeline. Really cool app. It also has compatibility for Mastodon, so if you're not ready to go there now, consider trying Twidere and it will make the transition really easy if the ship finally sinks.
