You want to hear about some private company bullshit?
AmeriStarRail (which previously tried to privatize the NEC) has proposed opening a new "high speed rail line" from New York to LA called The Transcontinental Chief using existing trackage and replacing 2 amtrak lines, the issue? It doesn't increase speeds, they promise to get between the 2 cities in under 72 hours but the current journey takes 67 hours, so no time would be saved but it would replace 2 existing public rail lines with private ones, meaning an increase in costs for riders
