Today is about Black Panther but it isn't only about Black Panther. For just as we carry the vision of our ancestors forward, so too does this film. It's the culmination of Blade, Hancock, Blankman, Meteor Man, Spawn, that really bad Catwoman with Halle Berry and the even worse Steel starring Shaquille O'Neal. This is about all those black creatives who could never get funding because no one with money believed there was an audience for their weirdness. This is about pride and representation, for the ones who got us here and the young ones who will take us further. This is about Stan Lee and Jack Kirby who in the 60's decided to create an image of Africa that went against ever popular notion of the time. It's about Christopher Priest, the first black man to write for the character, and Ta-Nehisi Coates, who is on his own fantastic run. It's about the fact that my 71 year old mother got excited by a comic book movie trailer because of all those faces that look like her own.
