Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus), recognized by its textured, dark head and thick shell. These tortoises are considered a keystone species because their deep burrows provide essential shelter for over 350 other animal species. They are native to the southeastern United States, particularly within longleaf pine forests, but face population threats from habitat loss.
