hi!! im here after seeing your ID request on herpsandbirds. its super cool that you have a gopher tortoise in your backyard. there is only one tortoise species in north florida so any tortoise you see from here on out is also a gopher :) they’re pretty common in north florida especially on sunny days. theyre crazy animals though check this shit outtt
entire ecosystems rely on their burrows just like the one you have in your backyard. they’re sprawling with interconnected rooms that house much more than just the tortoise. and they’re just chill. the mice and the frogs and the beetles (not listed in the pic but sometimes even burrowing owls!) coexist with it as roommates. its like if an airbnb was for all of north florida’s ecology. the turtle that carries the world on its back is real and its the gopher tortoise
