集中力の習得においていちばん重要なステップは、本も読まず、ラジオも聞かず、タバコも吸わず、酒も飲まずに、ひとりでじっとしていられるようになることだ。実際、集中できるということは、ひとりきりでいられるということであり、ひとりでいられるようになることは、人を愛せるようになるための必須条件のひとつである。もし自分の足で立てないという理由で他人にしがみつくとしたら、その相手は命の恩人にはなりうるかもしれないが、ふたりの関係は愛の関係ではない。逆説的ではあるが、ひとりでいられる能力こそ、愛する能力の前提条件なのだ。ひとりでいる努力をしてみれば、それがいかにむずかしいかがわかるはずだ。ひとりでいると、そわそわと落ち着かなくなり、かなりの不安をおぼえさえする。こんなことをしてもなんの価値もない、ばかげている、時間をとられすぎる、などという理屈をこねては、この習練を続けたくないという自分の気持ちを正当化しようとする。
