I did jarthur shared body hcs awhile ago but I've been reading a lot of fics of them post s6 with separate bodies so here's some random jarthur separate bodies hcs for your enjoyment:
They are so used to sharing a body that once separated, things like privacy and personal space don't really occur to them as something they should pay attention to with each other. It is very common to see them taking up the same physical space (brushing up against each other, leaning full chest-to-back over each other to look at something, physically moving the other instead of asking them to move, etc., etc.), and they are almost always touching in some way. Their default standing positioning in almost any situation is John slightly behind Arthur, with their shoulders pressed together. If one of them is seated, the other is probably either hovering behind them or perched on the arm of their chair. They do not find their physical proximity to be strange in any way because they've been a lot closer. They don't even notice how close they are unless someone else points it out, which isn't very often since people think they're freaky, so they try not to draw their attention.
Arthur is a decently tall man, but John is a good half foot taller than Arthur, and a bit broader. The sudden height difference is a bit of an adjustment for John, as he had become used to seeing things from Arthur's height and judging distances in proportion to Arthur's body size, so he bumped into a lot of things in the first few days of walking around in his own body.
Because they primarily interact with each other, John is less aware of the social norms of personal space than most people are, and therefore, has made multiple people uncomfortable by getting too close to them/touching them to move them out of his way. Arthur is subconsciously aware of John at all times, so he will subtly pull John back to his side if he's getting too close to other people and make apologies if necessary. The only other person who doesn't seem to mind John's extreme closeness is Faroe because she recognized very quickly that physical proximity to someone he knows seems to be a sort of comfort for John, so she made an effort to be close to him, and now she doesn't think anything of it. She pretty frequently leans on him and links arms with him when they’re walking, particularly if Arthur isn’t with them, because she wants John to feel comfortable.
Despite his earlier complaints that Arthur could talk to anyone, while he was only able to talk to Arthur, John doesn't actually have much of a desire to speak to other people very often. He is fully capable and does not have any anxiety about talking to other people; he just doesn't really want to. Most of the time—whether it's as simple as ordering something at a cafe or as complex as communicating with police about a case—Arthur is the designated talker of the two of them. It's not uncommon to see John lean down and say something to Arthur while he's talking to someone else, and have his input voiced by Arthur instead of just outright saying it. John's a bit of an attack dog, though, and he loves a good argument, so he is more than willing to yell at someone, particularly if they are brushing off, ignoring, or being rude to Arthur. If a point needs to be made, John will make it, and since he is more physically imposing and doesn't speak as often, people tend to listen to him. However, John does occasionally forget that other people can hear him now, and he has openly insulted multiple people while standing right in front of them.
If their investigations require touching any unknown or gross-looking substance, it automatically becomes Arthur's job because John will refuse. The idea that if Arthur has not touched it and deemed it acceptable, John will not touch it applies to most things, even if they are just regular objects that he has not seen before, because he is very picky about the texture of things that he touches. The only exception to the rule is corpses because he has to touch them for his visions to work, but he hates doing it. There have been multiple instances of people attempting to hand him things, only to have him stare at them until Arthur reaches around him and grabs the thing, but if Arthur hands something off, he won’t bat an eye before taking it. He also avoids shaking hands with people as often as possible, usually by either busying himself with something else or simply hanging back from the conversation, because he doesn’t like not knowing what their hand is going to feel like before he touches it.
Arthur had a hell of a time introducing John to food because he is also a very picky eater. They discovered that John hates anything bitter or sour, but he is weirdly into spicy food. The first thing aside from water that John ever consumed was a sip of Arthur's coffee, which he promptly spit out and declared disgusting. John prefers tea, but if he has to drink coffee for whatever reason, he takes it with honey and a bunch of cream, which Arthur finds horrifying and much too sweet. They are chronic meal repeaters because John is very hesitant to try new things.
John will occasionally catch himself describing things to Arthur and apologize, but Arthur always tells him to continue, even if he's actively looking at the same thing, because he likes the way John seems to find beauty in the most mundane things. Even when John isn't around, Arthur finds himself taking more time to just take in the world around him than he ever has before, wondering what John would think of certain sights. If John is around, he will sometimes prompt him to talk about what he's seeing just because he misses the way John describes things.
the longer I sit with obsession the more empathy I start to feel for entity!nikki. this creature that was created solely to love one person with this all-encompassing intensity that needed to be stronger than anything anyone felt in the entire world. entity!nikki whose entire world was just one single focal point; she'd do anything for bear to love her. she didn't know anything when she came into existence, but she was willing to do anything to get this man to fall for her.
it must have been equally terrifying for her as it was for the real nikki to have someone else fight for control over what she perceived as her body. the scene where she's sobbing in the corner, terrified of her dreams is now more sad than terrifying to me. real nikki, who has just been raped by her once best friend hurting so badly that it seeps into entity!nikki's nightmares. entity!nikki who doesn't understand why the thing she wanted so badly is causing her so much pain. why she can't bring herself to lie in bed next to the man who is the center of her world.
and the worst part is bear doesn't even seem to like her. she's trying so so hard; she made a lovely memorial for his dead cat, she waited for him to come home all day without moving an inch, she made sure to be the most doting girlfriend at the party, and he's not pleased by any of it. he seems disturbed and angry and scared and she has no idea what to do to make it better. to make it worse, he keeps asking her to behave like the original nikki but he was the one who wished for her!! she can't be like nikki because nikki was simply not capable of loving bear even a fraction of how much she does!
she can't seem to reconcile it; he wanted her so badly he conjured her into reality and now he doesn't want her anymore. she doesn't know what to do. she tries everything. she obsesses over him, she threatens to hurt herself, she gets rid of that bitch sarah who keeps distracting him and trying to steal him away, and then dresses in her clothes for good measure and he still doesn't want her.
and then finally in a fit of desperation, she makes the wish and for one beautiful moment its all perfect. he's finally looking at her the way she looks at him. and then he's dead and she's lost everything.
her entire existence, from the moment of her conception to her death was painful, and confusing, and so very sad.
this is a moment in the original script that I wish they'd kept in the final version of obsession. the absolute disgusting way that real nikki appearing just becomes routine for bear and he completely ignores her in order to keep her. it's so horrifying the way her torment turns into something he hardly acknowledges
I need to see it again to pinpoint the details but I really like how the opening scene of obsession (2026) is Bear practicing his confession with a diner waitress... like already you have a woman (who is not Nikki) fulfilling the role for her, saying the response she thinks Bear would like to hear, but the moment this woman gives her own opinion, offering genuine advice to Bear (something along the lines of buying Nikki something she likes, like her favorite candy, flowers, etc)... Bear disregards it... but then ends up using Ian's recommendation from this same conversation (calling Nikki "Freaky Nikki")... like god its all already right there

it is terrifying that bear only sought to "alter" his wish rather than cancelling it but what is even more terrifying is that he wouldn't even have called the number had nikki not inconvenienced him. if she did not act in such extreme ways bear wouldn't even have a problem. which is sooooo sooooo terrifying because he was completely fine living and being "loved" by nikki who he knew wasn't the real her. he claimed to love her, but even when she started acting like a totally different person it was water off a duck's back for him. he DIDN'T CARE whether it was the real nikki or an entirely different person.
even when she begs him to kill her, he does not feel even a shred of pity for her; he only worries "is being with me that bad".
the only reason he tries to change anything is because her behavior started to scare him FREAK him out. had she acted in a meeker way, bear would've lived with her HIS WHOLE LIFE knowing she ISN'T the real nikki NOT GIVING A FUCK about what she would've wanted. PERIOD.
the more i sit with it the more i realise that the title of the movie did not refer to nikki's obsession with bear but rather his obsession with her. because i know fs that what he felt for her definitely wasn't love.
i absolutely love how nikki is nearly always bathed in shadow (whether it’s fully in the dark or with a single light behind her with her as the faceless darkness). she’s quite literally become a shadow of her former self. no autonomy, no personal thoughts or emotions, just a carved image of what bear desired.
nikki breaks my heart so bad because in the brief moments we see her before the wish kicks in, she's so cool and funny, clearly kindhearted, very driven about her future (telling bear about how she was going to quit her job to focus on her writing), and also very sure of herself as a person. ive seen people describe this movie as "mean-spirited" and I think thats so apt because it was a 2 hour long tragedy of the torture of this innocent girl, taking away everything she's ever had, including her own sense of self, putting her through unimaginable horrors, and leaving her with nothing except the three dead bodies of her friends, with the one who she trusted most being the one who did this to her. nothing for her to look for hope in, because she has nothing before her except a lifetime in prison or in an institution. it would be one thing if the movie ended on a note like weapons, where everything was over and there would hopefully be recovery somewhere down the line, but here, not only was the evil not committed by a random stranger but her closest friend, but she doesn't get any chance at recovery either. so goddamn tragic. on that note, if anyone can come up with some sort of fix-it for nikki please link it to me because I will be crying about this girl forever.
if i think too hard about nikki’s experience in Obsession i feel physically ill. imagine one second you’re just walking up to your house after a night out, and then the next, you’re looking out of your own body, but you’re not longer in control. you’re a prisoner to a terrible, unnatural version of yourself that only exists because of a choice someone else made. when you scream, nobody listens. when you claw your way out for long enough to explain that this isn’t you, nobody listens. when you beg the man who trapped you in this situation to put and end to it, to set your free, he just. doesn’t. listen. and then when you do finally regain control, all your friends are dead, and you are covered in their blood. because of a choice someone else made
not your nikki

you wished for this.
One thing about Obsession (2026) that I enjoyed was that it almost asks you to feel empathy for the entity possessing Nikki as well as the real one. Like, obviously the things she's doing are horrific and fucked up, but I think the scene where Bear is asking her to "just be Nikki!" and she eventually just desperatly screams "I can't be Nikki!" does a really good job of showcasing the entity's inner feelings. She's been created with the sole purpose of loving this guy more than anyone else but no matter how perfect it is or how much he claims to love her, its not her that he loves, its Nikki. And any time she stops pretending to be Nikki, he reacts (albeit rightfully) with disgust and horror. She can't be Nikki because Nikki would never love Bear, and so Bear will never love her.
Just saw the interview where Curry Barker explained that it's totally possible to get a normal wish from the One Wish Willow, and I love the way they did that so much. The reason Obsession happened isn't because it's trying to twist Bear's desires into something evil. It's not even because he phrased his want wrong. Obsession happened because Bear got his hands on a magic item that could do anything in existence, and chose to force someone to fall in love with him, which is an inherently evil thing to do.
nikki begging bear to kill her and all he does is ask whats so bad about being with him. one of the most nauseating scenes ive ever witnessed
there’s something so gutwrenching about the fact that the female characters in obsession have real dreams and wishes but never get the chance to see them realized, while both male characters waste their wishes on short-term selfish satisfaction. they were complex, free-spirited young women who just wanted to create art, and they were destroyed by a man determined to confine them to his superficial perception of them. nikki wanted to be a writer, sarah wanted to be a tattoo artist and now neither of them will get to be anything at all
