I’ll try to keep this brief since a lot of you already know whats up. For those that don’t: I suffer with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, a hormonal disorder that causes issues with the menstrual cycle and comes with a heightened risk of diabetes and cancer. There’s a bunch of other little nasty symptoms too, like fatigue and weight gain that’s almost impossible to manage/lose.

Menstrual cycle problems are the worst right now, however. Not only am I often in a greater deal of pain than I should be, but I’ll go months without a period only for my uterus to try and make it up with 30+ days of nonstop bleeding. Sometimes my flow is so heavy I’ll go through an entire 20-pack of the heaviest-duty overnight pads within 24-hours. This is extremely costly. I wake up covered in blood, I lose so much of it I become anemic, my flow can change in a second causing me to have accidents in public. That’s only just scratching the surface.

Treatment is often hormonal birth control combined with metformin for diabetes prevention. I’ve also been told that when I’m ready to transition, testosterone will settle things down too. However, I haven’t had any medication since before the pandemic started, thanks to the only BC that’s worked for me being $60 a month which is more than I could afford after a while. Plus, a doctor that wasn’t taking things seriously when prescribed generics came with intolerable symptoms, and was extremely difficult to schedule appointments with. Enter Planned Parenthood: Where I could likely get the BC I need for free or a reduced cost, where I could have access to medical care I could put more faith in, and where I could finally access affordable HRT as a future alternative. This is the preferred option I want to pursue ASAP, honestly. As much as I appreciate the general return to normal when taking BC, the way it balances out my hormones does result in serious dysphoria.

The issue: It’s $200 upfront for my first appointment. They have programs to waive the fee but none are available in my state. When $60 is too much, I felt so completely devastated by this information. I was hoping we could still steadily save up for it, but things have just gotten worse financially since my mom was forced to quit her job, I’m not even eating semi-consistently, and it doesn’t look like things are going to be getting better just yet. Meanwhile, my health continues to get worse, and continues to cost more. I feel bad asking for help if I’m being honest but I don’t know what else to do at this point, and now that I’m also starting to notice signs of prediabetes again, I just don’t want this to snowball. I’m unable to work. My mom is doing her best. I just need help.
