the background
-came from a great and loving family; mother simone, father william, and little sister della
- his father was a legendary kansas city grillmaster, constantly winning competitions all over the country and they had a family restaurant for 35 years called ‘sweet simone’s”, named after his mother. (it was once featured on diners, drive-ins, and dives. thanks mr. fieri.)
- gideon’s love of cooking with his dad came a close second to his love of basketball. he was the all star of his high school basketball team, and was recruited and signed to an athletic scholarship to the university of kansas and played for the jayhawks -- bringing them to one NCAA championship in his time there. growing up watching players like kobe and shaq, his ultimate dream was to be drafted to play for the lakers. unfortunately, that dream didn’t get a chance to play out.
- his younger sister, della, had fallen in with, for lack of better words, an abusive asshole. when she had finally managed to free herself of him, he stalked her. the family went through the proper channel, calling the police and filing for a restraining order, but their voices were not heard and it went denied. gideon sent a set of texts to the man, warning him to never come near his sister or contact her again and laying out specific threats. one night, della called him in a panic because the man was trying to break into her apartment. gideon arrived moments later with a baseball bat, and it wasn’t just for show.
- that night, gideon was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; his sister's abuser in the ICU with a spinal cord injury that left him without the ability to ever walk again. the story made brief national headlines, but of course no one focused on the context of the situation. his parents sold ‘sweet simone’s’ in order to cover the legal costs.
-the threats gideon had made via text came back to bite him at trail. he was sentenced to ten years, but was eligible for parole. he served five years in jail before he was released for good behavior, being commended as a ‘model inmate’.
- during his time in jail, gideon’s father had been diagnosed with alzheimers. it was hard to watch his father decline, but he was grateful to spend the time with him. it was difficult to find a job with a felony attached to his name, but he started as a dishwasher and worked his way up to a line cook by the time his father passed.
- in his will, gideon’s father had left his son a firebox full of recipe cards -- the family recipes and secret ingredients that had made his dad a legend.
- his mother moved down to florida to live with her sister, and della had moved to chicago. He had no reason to stay tied to kansas city anymore, but where to go? well, why not move to the land of the lakers?
- he worked at the golden griddle for many years, saving up money and holding down odd jobs until he was able to purchase an old food truck off of craigslist. after fixing it up, ‘smokeshow barbeque’ was born!
-he’s had the truck for almost three years now, and it’s success continues to grow. he parks at festivals, caters parties, and hangs outside of bars at closing times with the people with munchies -- serving them good old fashioned barbeque and sides, but sometimes with fusion twists that leave the menu ever changing.

-while my boy was definitely a cocky little fuck in his basketball days, he’s been truly humbled now. genuinely a good guy, tries not to let his temper get the best of him.
