A series of flashpoints around the U.S. has exposed deep racial divides and reignited a national conversation about race. A new Pew Research Center survey finds profound differences between black and white adults in their views on race relations and equality.
On Views of Race and Inequality, Blacks and Whites Are Worlds Apart
Naturally curious children have that curiosity systematically removed throughout their schooling experience ... we stop questioning and start lecturing ... it follows that they also stop questioning Or, this is how i am reading this portion of Pearse and Walton (2011)
Summertime, and the living is easy
Clearly Gershwin was never a Ph.D. student.
Thus far, I am co-writing on three projects and am reading near everything I can ... In just over two weeks, I’ve completed Milner’s book, read half of Pimm, in addition pieces of Kliebard, Eisner, Phillips, Arnheim, Bruner, Noddings, and Sternberg & Caruso
when does the “easy living” part begin?
Struggling …
Spherical triangles a metaphor based on the analogy …
Great circles : the sphere :: straight lines : the plane
Okay … the analogy makes sense … the difference between plane and spherical geometry …
But then … a triangle being defined as being created by three “straight-line segments” which (1) is redundant in plane geometry and (2) and not the case in spherical geometry … as a segment follows a great circle, not a straight line
So the definining a triangle with three connecting line segments seems sufficient and transferable in both cases … the adjective “spherical” is needed, but i dont know that i see “spherical triangle” as a metaphor
What am i missing?

Currently reading through ...
“Speaking Mathematically” by David Pimm (1987) …
I went in certain that there is a language that we call “mathematics” but we fail to approach even elementary mathematics from the perspective of language instruction …
Half way through, i think i am on board with his characterization of a “mathematical register” in English built through metaphors … but, for me, that doesn’t negate the existence of a language called “mathematics”
Also … totally convinced that teachers MUST keep students informed as to “how” and “why” decisions are made in class … not a novel idea for me, but a reoccuring theme in this book

Summer has begun, and one book is read
The end of the Spring semester brings me one year closer to a Ph.D. in Education (focusing on elem math ed) … which is terrifying, but at least I’ll be able to write my own doctor’s notes

Distraught in all kinds of ways
An arrest was made in the Haruka Weiser death ... leading to all kinds of issues for me.
First ... to have a murder, on a campus that I love, in an area of that campus I would often frequent ... overly troubling for me ...
Second ... the arrest seems reasonable, given that this guy looks similar to the guy on the released video, and he was found with Weiser’s bag
Third ... I began reading comments about this 17 year old kid that basically hae him convicted and executed already ... largely because he’s Black and homeless ... so *obviously* he’s responsible
I don’t know what he did or didn’t do ... and feel an arrest warranted, but no way in hell should this dude be spoken about as though he is already a convicted felon ... because we don’t have information enough to make that claim ... nor is it our role to pass judgement until selected to the jury of peers
Roots Reclaiming Their Space
This post is dedicated to the magnificent tree roots that beautifully resist the boundaries set for them by our civilization. Tree roots reclaiming their space from concrete. Source: culturainquieta
