for the @merthurmicrofic prompt: Stars words: 757
“I still can’t believe my father had bribed you into this.” Arthur huffed as he cocooned himself further into the blankets. Fluffy, warm blankets shielding him from the cold. But also, hiding his pout.
“You know I hate your camping ideas Arthur. Especially at this time of the season! Just look at yourself! One more minute and you’ll have icicles hanging from your nose.” Merlin was so glad that he brought his own blankets because Arthur was hogging all he had brought and wouldn’t share.
This was so typical of him. At any minor inconvenience at work, Arthur had to drive his wagon to the outer skirts of the city and camp. And of course Merlin been dragged into these, because one, he can’t say no to Arthurs puppy dog eyes, two, Morgana was terrifying and three, Uther was even more terrifying. It was also ridiculous that Arthur always insisted on sleeping on the back of his wagon instead of using the nice van with proper beds that Morgana got him.
It feels like cheating, Merlin
“I’m not cold Merlin.” Said a very cold, shaky Arthur.
Merlin just rolled his eyes. He fished back to get his tea flask and get them both cups. The warmness and the steam eased his nerves. As he drank his tea, he felt the warm flow through his core.
Tea really was magic, especially in cold weather.
Arthur wouldn’t agree to it out loud, but he was glad that Merlin came with him on these trips. While Arthur just wanted an escape from his frustrations, Merlin made this more like a safe space. Once empty wagon was now a tiny pocket of coziness.
At first, it was his socks.
Your toes will fall off with those thin ass socks
And Arthur was subjected to wear fluffy socks that looked like stoats.
Then, his snacks. Or rather, the lack of them.
You didn’t bring anything to eat you dollephead?!
Arthur just wanted to be away and well, he only remembered his growling stomach miles away from the city.
I changed those abominations you call pillows into some real ones
You don’t have first aid kit?!
Why am I not surprised at the lack of bug spray?
Here, put some sunscreen, I don’t wanna deal with a whiny lobster.
Merlin didn’t only force him to camp normally. He made the wagon feel more lived in too. There was always a jar of tea powder to bru. Colorful blankets to keep them warm. Fairy lights to decorate the wagon. Even a brown toad plushie with a crown on top of its head because he looks just like you Arthur!
And call Arthur impulsive but he just had to get the toad plush a dragon plushie friend because…because he say so!
And most importantly, Merlin made him gaze at the stars.
Merlin was such a nerd about these things, always babbling about news on space or a paper he read about planets. Arthur loved watching Merlin talk with so much passion. His eyes would lighten up whenever Arthur asked him for something space related.
Here, away from the city, the night sky was clear. Merlin would make himself comfy in the blankets and gaze above. Tell Arthur of any constellation he could recognize. It was adorable to see Merlin rush him to make a wish whenever a shooting star passed by.
Before, Arthur just wanted to find solace in the dark, but Merlin had brightened his darkest moments.
Merlin was quietly gazing at the stars above with a small smile. They were sitting so close, Arthur could see a dust of freckles on Merlins nose. He tried to count them but…
“Your freckles…they’re so many.” Arthur shifted closer. “It’s like…your eyes couldn’t hold all the stars in them, so some fell down to your temples,” Arthur whispered.
They were so close to one another, a fragile moment with both souls lost in their emotions.
Arthurs eyes finally left Merlin’s as they landed on his lips. He moved closer gently. Softly sealing their lips.
Merlin’s lips were so tender against his own. He felt Merlin kissing him back and happily sighed.
Merlin’s hands were in his hair. The soft noises he was making made Arthurs heart race. He moved back just enough to look at Merlin again.
“Your eyes really are like galaxies.” Arthur paused and laughed at his own cheesiness. “Gee, heh. That’s pretty corny tho, huh?”
Merlin just giggled and shook his head. Tonight, all he wanted to gaze at was his starboy.
