QUESTION: How do I find my true self? ANON I MUS: You find yourself by turning your attention inward to the simple and undeniable fact that you are âawareâ. The observing part of you is still, silent, unborn and never changes. Awareness is that unbroken, one reality beneath the layers of illusion; it is there before, during and after any thoughts, emotions, moods, roles, habits, personality traits, identities, experiences, stories and conditioned responses. The more you notice this non-reactive, undeniable presence, the more you can find yourself untouched, free from all mental activity. The mind is not a solid entity; it is merely a collection of fleeting thoughts, just like a crowd is just a collection of individuals.Â
You are already awareness which means you cannot step out of it to try to find it. Simply rest in the unchanging essence of who you are (without any form, concepts or labels). This presence is the undeniable ground of being, the empty space in which all experiences arise and subside. When you see that the mind itself is an illusion, stillness naturally follows. The real change is not something you have to create or maintain; you have to simply recognize what you already are aware with no boundary or separation (even when it feels like your not).Â
This is the beginning of self-inquiry, the process of seeing through what was never real to begin with (the illusion of a separate âIâ). True silence is not an achievement, it is a realization of the underlying reality that is always present. When you rest in the silent witness, you see clearly that you are and have always been awake, at peace and effortlessly free (transcending the limits of personal doer-ship and separateness).Â
God is not hidden from reality. God is hidden behind the veil of the false world your dualistic mind keeps projecting over it. You do not arrive to God, you just stop overlooking what has always been here. At the deepest reality, you are no just a passing experience. Your true nature is not limited to birth and death; it is timeless, limitless, still and at peace. Distance is created by identification with your thoughts, fears, conditioning and your separate self. Ultimately, there is only the unchanging, living presence that has always been here all along; It is the silent fullness beneath all names and forms.
