Essentially, I was using a gmail account as the contact email for an Ao3 collection for a fandom event that i run and google in all it's infinite stupididy decided to flag it as a child (I am an adult, RIP) and then refused to see reason.

getting flagged means:

you cant send feedback about issues anymore

it messes with safe search settings

cant see anything age restricted on youtube

get told to take breaks on youtube

and other bullshit i am sure

it wants your ID, credit card, or photo to prove you're an adult (which doesnt even work sometimes)

anyway! google also uses your date to train their AIs so that's also a good reason to leave them, in addition to the tangle of issues with age verification (it's invasive, and bad for the internet. i mean that.)

anyhow! i personally recommend proton for email and such, i use it and it works well:

they have many apps that google does and are supposed to be a lot more private. they also have a good VPN if you need one (you totally shouldn't *wink wink* use it to get around your country' age-gating rules)

oh and for writers out there, cant recommend ellipsus enough as a gdocs alternative, it's a little rough around the edges still but they're very anti-AI and it's actually built for writers so yeah Ellipsus is awesome.
