Water moves on. A river never clings to the water that has passed.
We cannot hold on to moments that are already gone.
Fluent, Like a River
The Irish poet, priest, and philosopher John OâDonohue (1956-2008) wrote,
Fluent
I would like to live
Like a river flows.
Carried by the surprise
Of its own unfolding.
Iâm glad for the image of water, flowing. Iâm glad for the invocation of how the river is never the same twice. It changes. As do we.
The river and its flow are as close as I can find to what we humans are in our shifting consciousness, or perhaps spirit. We too, are never the same twice. We too, are carried by an inherent unfolding.
There is something compellingly inviting to me in the invitation to notice ourselves, others, and the many scales of composite, as flowing.
The river is not the water, nor the banks.
We humans, in these many places of dwelling, are not just mind, nor are we just shells for physiology.
For when we, like the river, are seen as mystery in motion, ah, then it gets so much more interesting and alive.
I too, would like to be a bit more fluent in all of that.

surely this is a sign that thereâs nothing in particular wrong with the atmosphere right now

mothers really be like âiâm not strong enough for this." then wake up 6 times throughout the night, battle ppd/ppa in silent, soothe a teething/sick child, make sure everyone is fed except for themselves, fold laundry during nap time, face their own trauma through raising their children, feel guilty that they aren't doing enough, and still manage to make it to every appointment.

as a kid i used to think everyone hated me because i was gay. i also thought that i got cancer because of it and that god hated me. i also thought my parents treatment of me was right, when it was abuse
nowadays i am surrounded by nothing but the kindest, most loving humans on earth. friends who throw me surprise birthday parties and travel the globe just to keep me company! (things i never ever thought i would deserve!) people who visit me in the hospital and people who call me late at night just because! i am a highly successful and accomplished lesbian, and i am finding so much love and support despite the sexism and homophobia i face, and every night i go to sleep happy. i used to cry every night as a teenager, and now all i do is smile and feel so at peace. i never thought i could feel this stable. i thought i was somehow worse and doomed to always feel unstable and sad and always have panic attacks, and now its been about three years since my last one
it genuinely gets so much better. you just have to survive the hard parts, then the growing pains feel like heaven. moving 5k miles from my home, leaving bad friends, it was all so hard and all so worth it. i thank the world i got to get old every day, and i cant wait to get older :-)
to anyone struggling right now - all you have to do tonight is survive. you will flourish someday, but if all you can do tonight is live, then live. it wont be easy to change your lide, but itll feel like the best thing on earth, and the feeling you get at dinner surrounded by people who love you and you love, that will make it all worth it. its beautiful to be queer once you make it out <3
so glad you feel like you're on the other side of this now, hope you continue feeling the support of queer joy!

I love unaligned love. I love love and affection between nonbinary people that cannot be put into a box like wlw / mlm or even nblw / nblm. I love nonbinary love that isn't tied to dichotomies or adjacent to binary identities. I love when nonbinary people love each other in a way that just is and isn't defined by anything but their affection for each other and their lack of binary association.
Frankly, despite me not being ace or aro myself, this is a very aspec post because it's also very much about love and affection outside of traditional romantic love or sexual relationships. I've very much expanded my own view of and experience with affection, love, and sex due to conversations and relationships with aspec folks and that's very intertwined with the way I understand the way I experience attraction as a nonbinary person.
We have so much to learn from each other with regards to the ways we exist outside of traditional bounds of sex, gender, romance, and intimacy. Being an allo nonbinary person in community with ace and aro folks across the spectrum of asexual and aromantic is genuinely a blessing.
This is leaning more into the aroacespec relationships part but I love atypical relationships. I love close friendships where you can be physically affectionate. I love deep romantic relationships where you donât do the stereotypically romantic things. I love romantic relationships where kissing or physical affection is needed to show love. I love friendships where you can kiss and only be platonic. I love relationships where you canât fit it into any box. I love relationships that arenât âjust friendsâ or âstraightâ or âgayâ or âlesbianâ and that are just happy. I love relationships that arenât platonic or romantic and just are. I love relationships you donât put a label on.
I love relationships that donât look the way weâre conditioned that kind of relationship âhas toâ or âshouldâ look.
Let people show and receive love the way they want in their relationships. And celebrate that difference in intimacy. As long as everyone feels loved, respected, and cared for, I think atypical relationships are wonderful.
Let nonbinary people love other nonbinary people in a nonbinary way. Let nblnb people not have to be gay or lesbian and just be nblnb. Hell! Let one of them be gay and the other be lesbian! Who cares?
Donât put people into a label they didnât agree to. Regardless of how you think they should be.
