Happy Birthday, Katniss ᥫ᭡
|| as depicted in my fic "We Danced Anyway" ||
I would love to see an emotional, soft fic with the reunion in mark of Athena. Maybe a little angst involved? Preferably with black Annabeth and blonde Percy if you enjoy writing them that way :)
your wish is my command, darling o'mine!
(just so it's known, i'll only write black Annabeth/blonde Percy. there is no other option for them in my stories).
just a little disclaimer: it's been almost ten years since i read that book, and i still haven't reread it (my mistake, i'm working on fixing that), so there might be a few too many inconsistencies to the book, but i tried the best my memory allowed. hope it doesn't ruin your experience and i really, truly hope you like this story :)
why i went to war (there you are)
read it on Ao3
Absence, ultimately, was familiar to Annabeth.
It wasn’t welcome or wanted, but it was familiar. It had threaded itself through her life so early that sometimes she wondered whether she had learned its language before she learned any other. It had shaped the edges of her childhood, settled into the spaces between words, followed her from place to place like a shadow that never quite detached itself from her feet.
Her father meant absence.

“this machine is killing me, i pretended it was make-believe”
And speaking of father's day, a reminder that "Peeta wanted them so badly" does not equal "he pressured Katniss" or that "he was constantly asking Katniss for a baby" or that Katniss didn't want them. He just wanted them and there's nothing wrong with that.
(Also, Katniss has a habit of reflecting her own secret wishes on other characters, see the moment after the beach kiss when she sees the dream about Peeta's children and decides there and then Peeta must have them, even though Peeta had never expressed such wishes)

Spite, the great motivator
“Life after menopause is exceptionally rare in animals. It can evolve only in creatures where grannies help younger family members survive. Only human, killer whale, and short-finned pilot whale females routinely live for substantial periods after they stop breeding. Like humans, killer and pilot whales have roughly twenty-five to thirty childbearing years, then can live another thirty or so. And as Ken’s just explained, some live a lot longer. Up to a quarter of the females in a group are postreproductive. These whales are not waiting to die; they are helping their children survive. As human children often benefit from their grandmothers’ attention, killer whale grandmothers boost their grandkids’ survival. A rather bizarre twist of killer whale society is that killer whale mothers remain crucial to the survival of their adult children. When older killer whale females die, their adult children start dying at high rates, especially males. Male killer whales who are under thirty years old when their mothers die suffer a tripling of the annual mortality rate compared to males in their age group whose mothers are still alive. Male killer whales who are more than thirty years old when their mothers die face death rates more than eight times as high as males in their age group whose mothers are still living. Daughters under thirty show no mortality increase after their mothers’ death. But daughters older than thirty when their mothers die have more than two and a half times the death rate of same-age females whose mothers are alive. Males’ handicaps of the extra drag of their huge dorsal and pectoral fins and the extra food required for their immense size (at around 20,000 pounds, males can be one-third more massive than females) seem to make them reliant on their working mothers for food. Females don’t have the males’ impediments, but while raising young, females may rely on food shared by their no-longer-breeding mothers. Adult females share essentially all the fish they catch, and more than half goes to their children. Adult males share their catch only about 15 percent of the time—usually with their mothers. While no one fully understands their strange death pattern following the loss of a mother, extreme parental care is likely at the root. Toothed whales are the world’s champion nursers. Short-finned pilot whales continue to produce milk for up to fifteen years after the birth of their last calf, likely nursing other females’ young. In bottlenose and Atlantic spotted dolphins (further study might reveal others), some females never give birth. Denise Herzing dubbed them “career females,” because their role in society does not include motherhood. They might be infertile. They might be gay. But their contribution is crucial: they do a lot of babysitting. When Herzing entered the ocean with a visiting nine-year-old girl, “White Patches, the eternal babysitter herself, had never seen me babysitting a young human before. Her excitement vocalizations were audible and electric and she continued to swim around us, eyeing the human youngster attached to me.” (Researchers sometimes call babysitters “aunts.” That’s precisely who they often are.)”

I wish I could have heard you sing this… I bet you have a beautiful voice
There's something so meaningful about Katniss associating Peeta with dandelions, especially when you take into account the way Peeta is viewed by others throughout the trilogy and how dandelions are viewed in real life.
Dandelions are considered by many people to be weeds. They're not toxic, but they're eyesores in any perfect garden or lawn; they spread fast due to the way they seed, so they're considered invasive; their one use—attracting pollenators—is negated by the fact that their pollen is low in nutrients.
In other words, they're useless. They're pests.
Peeta throughout canon is treated similarly. It's a repeated theme that he is always brushed aside and disregarded in some way, second best to someone or something else. He's the third son. His mother deems him inadequate, he loses to his brother in wrestling, his father always wanted a daughter. Haymitch saves Katniss over him in the first games, the rebellion saves Katniss over him in the Quell. Peeta, in the eyes of others, inculding himself, has very little value. It's partially why in Catching Fire he says on the beach, "Nobody needs me."
And yet, we see how Katniss views dandelions, just as she views Peeta. To Katniss, dandelions are a sign of spring, the first bit of food bees get after winter, a sign of cultivation and new life on the horizon. They mean being sustained, for every bit of a dandelion is edible. They represent hope. To Katniss, dandelions are beautiful.
Peeta is her dandelion. He takes a beating to feed her when she's starving. The bread he gives her is enough to keep her alive for when spring comes, and she can forage in the woods. At her lowest, most cynical, and most suicidal, Peeta returns to her and plants a garden outside her window so that she can mourn in peace, and bakes her bread for breakfast the next morning so she can eat. So she can live.
There is so much in the text that shows us how valuable Katniss finds Peeta. To her, Peeta is incredibly kind, talented, and intelligent. He's a wordsmith. He's her hope. He's beautiful.
But I think it's best expressed in Catching Fire, in response to Peeta's assessment of his worth: "It's true his family doesn't need him. They will mourn him, as will a handful of friends. But they will get on. Even Haymitch, with the help of a lot of white liquor, will get on. I realize only one person will be damaged beyond repair if Peeta dies. Me.
'I do,' I say. 'I need you.'"
To Katniss, Peeta is everything but a weed.
literally though if you feel like your life is slipping through your fingers and every day goes too fast… try doing hard things, not just taking the easy route, like reading and making art and exercising and cooking a meal from scratch and journaling, doing these things without distraction, without being absorbed on a screen… the time will stretch and you’ll be reminded that life is long and beautiful if you make it so.
Reblogging this with these tags because oh my goodness
To the person I reblogged this from THANK YOU i am now going to stick this on my pinboard where I’m gonna see it every single day

Oh dear god there’s more pictures
Learning this was an intentional genocide changed me.
I know most of those following me know this, but just to make it super clear. An Gorta Mór (The Great Hunger/the Great Famine) was a deliberate genocide of the Irish people. There was enough food grown in Ireland to make sure everyone was alive and healthy and survived. Instead it was exported, sent to England and elsewhere for profit while men, women, and children starved in the streets. While the English landlords fucked off and evicted starving families who couldn’t afford rent. While babies were too weak to cry and died at the side of the road.
They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. And we owe so much thanks to the other oppressed peoples, in particular the Choctaw Nation and the Masai, who sent money and grain to us.
Let me repeat that. The Choctaw Nation who had just gone through the Trail of Tears sent us money to try save Irish lives. It’s led to an understanding between Irish people and Native American tribes, most recently when we donated to the Navajo and Hopi fundraisers for COVID-19 relief, because while it may be a different tribe, Irish people will never forget those who helped us and we’ll help back.
The entire population of the island is less than seven million people. We’re still a million less on this island than pre famine. And it’s not that long ago. My grandmother’s grandparents lived through it. We’ve told the stories, it literally changed the DNA of the country. We have a national fear of renting, because so many people were evicted. People joke about Irish people always offering loads of food, but it’s because there’s that cultural memory of not being able to.
They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. We will not let them take our lives, we will not let them take our language. We lost so much, but we will not lose it all.
This is why I get so angry when people say “it was the potato famine, it was because of monoculture/microbes.”
Nope. The potatoes were the only thing Irish people were allowed to fucking eat, because as pointed out, the rest of the crops they were growing were for their landlords to ship to England. So when the one “worthless” crop they were allowed to eat rotted in the field, the English crown, empire, landlords, all shrugged and carried on. People starved to death lying next to productive fields.
so i'm in this backyard chickens group on reddit and someone just discovered their hen is transitioning and everyone is stoked
anyway in case you didn't know chickens will sometimes spontaneously f2m and it's pretty cool
these absolutely cannot stay in the tags
This is extremely common among chickens because a) like most birds, they only have one functioning ovary and b) their ovary does a LOT of hormonal heavy lifting in the sex department. So they're one ovary malfunction away from their body going "guess we're doin' rooster now" and growing different feathers and having them start crowing.

... I was lying in bed not falling asleep, ... I heard the door creak open. Peeta stood there in his pajamas, looking sheepish, one hand tugging at his hair in lieu of the question. "Well come on then," I said, pulling back the covers. "But you have to open the window yourself, I'm not getting back out of bed." - method acting like you love me; Ch. 3 by @whenyoureplayings0litaire
I have been obsessed with the imagery of my eepy shy Peeta tugging his hair in his jammies since I read it as a snippet months ago so I just had to draw him. This was supposed to be for a birthday present but it came together so quickly and I accidentally developed a crush on him so I want to post it now 👉👈 (I also got a better idea for bday present anyway 😈) so I hope you like it as a regular old thanks for being a pal on a regular day present 😘
closeup of his cutie face under the cut cause i love hims 🥰
