...deciding what to watch next

The twist definitely got me! I was initially curious about the psychic neighbour and the relevance of that added element of mysticism to the plot but then BOOM! things start making a LOT of sense in the last half an hour and you find yourself thinking, "no, it can't be..." hahaha

I enjoyed the plot twist's implied purpose in the overall story. It gave the characters the perfect emotional closure they needed and added a heartwarming yet bittersweet finish to an otherwise bleak and grim plot.

Ultimately, this is probably the coolest piece of Christian media there is. I liked how they didn't shy away from showing that religion can be manipulated and weaponised by those who want to control the vulnerable, as well as being something that can empower the weak and inspire those in need when in the hands of the people. That was cool.

Calling it the 'book that holds the secrets to saving humankind' is a bit of a stretch tho, especially in the apocalyptic ass world they're currently living in. Any sort of wilderness survival book would be 100x more useful; let's be fkn real lmao. Even a damn Bear Grylls autobiography would be more useful, c'mon now.

Academy Award for Best Animated Feature:

Open your eyes, Woody. There's plenty of kids out there. Sometimes change can be good.

Woody's arc is definitely the best thing about the movie. His purpose of making the two children he was attached to happy is complete, making him feel lost in his place in the world. Reuniting with Bo Peep reignited his sense of purpose and gave him a new chapter in life to look forward to. It was sincere and heartfelt.

However, it felt like this movie completely ignored every other character besides the leads. We barely got any lines or interactions from our original gang of toys, which didn't work in the film's favour since the new side characters were forgettable and lacked the charm/humour that solidified the first films as classics.

The Buzz we saw in this film felt straight up lobotomised. The 'inner voice' joke was funny, but that's all his character got up to in this film. He had no other sort of development, which I thought was odd haha.

The overall tone felt aimed at adults, specifically those who grew up with the first films, which made it way too solemn at times. I just don't think kids will choose to watch this compared to the first three, which were lively, memorable, and FUN.

The highlight was most definitely the acting. Sea's role in the first eps and Krist as the antagonist were especially memorable - they acted their fkn asses off!! I was seriously in awe with those two and how immersive they made the episodes feel. Godji's character added an extra layer of realism and depth to the show too. She killed it!

I loved the mysticism and the rituals! I especially enjoyed how they made Niran a 'grey jedi' when it comes to using his powers. He doesn't just vanquish the Yao because they are simply Yao, but examines the cause for their existence and the effect of removing it on the people whose energy created it in the first place, thus becoming an outcast. Fantastic stuff!

Sky and Nani were incredible as expected; their micro-expressions and physical acting really made this a standout series among others, especially with all of the tension and chemistry between their characters. Pete and Niran were exactly what each other needed to overcome their personal hurdles and I loved how they made their mutual support so crystal clear.

I've heard some debate around the term 'queerbait' being thrown around by viewers regarding this series but I reckon that's absolute nonsense.

These guys very successfully portrayed a blossoming bond between two young men that was built on trust, respect, and admiration, without having to throw in any dismissive 'no homo' jokes. They didn't have any other romantic partners, and the writing clearly has them written very couple-coded based on their dialogue, the whole soul-binding thing, and the jewellery swap.

It's extremely believable that these characters could date in the future or even just remain close friends. That does not make it queerbait. Their relationship is not exactly blatant, but it's not exactly subtle either....read between the lines, people!!!!!

The show was addictive to say the least. The story was MESSY, and the characters were way too obsessed with each other...but that's what ultimately made it so damn good and bingeable

Ayden's acting was superb. His microexpressions and nuanced body language added a very pitiable layer to his black flag character, and he is the reason so many people love Lu Feng. Everybody else's acting was decent, but he truly stood out.

The cinematography was great too! This was a well-made show with a good budget and resources

Now onto the characters themselves.......unpopular opinion, but Lu Feng is the villain of it all. Yes, he is a victim of homophobia and abuse, but his selfishness and arrogance were truly his downfall.

Anyone could see that Xiao Chen was initially willing to be with him, as long as it was hidden from his mother (cowardly? YES. But understandable given her poor health and the era). The two brothers and Qin Lang clearly had an unspoken agreement that they would all pretend until she passed away, then get together openly, keeping it as tensionless as possible with the parents, but Lu Feng really came in and blew up that plan because he couldn't access Xiao Chen when he wanted to....and fkn hell, all hell broke loose after that, didn't it?

He treated Xiao Chen more and more as an object to be possessed by him only, rather than a human being with friends and family. He even let his emotions warp into something very dark towards Xiao Chen. All of his loving devotion turned into an obsession to cause Xiao Chen as much pain as possible. That ain't redeemable in my books.

Even after being forgiven (lord knows how that happened), lying about the younger brother's location was just DIABOLICAL. I'm glad that mofo got therapy, but completely upturning Xiao Chen's life and family, and then kidnapping and assaulting him, is just too much.

The two brothers' relationships felt completely contrasted to each other, and I'm sure that was on purpose for a more dramatic effect lmao.

One notable thing though, is that this film is extremely dated to the comedy of its time...meaning it's full to the brim of racist ass 'rich white vs ghetto black' stereotypes.........not my cup of tea when the 'jokes' are so on the nose and one-sided :/ like wow this is really full-blown racism marketed as a family comedy lmfaooooooo

MERCY FOR NONE (2025, Choi Sung Eun)

I do think a few tweaks could have really made this a standout series though. The lead is doing all this revenge for his lil bro, but we barely get a glimpse of them together. More flashbacks of their bond would have been nice!

The writing was also pretty minimal. I get that bro is seeing red but a lil more dialogue from him here n there wouldn't have hurt lmao

Also, the lead is just straight up overpowered. He sends out a single punch and three men go flying. He gets shot three damn times and stabbed everywhere but is still able to keep going. It's just a bit much hahaha

If anything, I disliked people's interpretation of the characters this season. I keep seeing complaints that they nerfed woojin or made gunwoo a crybaby, but that's gotta be the media illiteracy talkin fr :/

To me, it was obvious that both characters experienced some major character growth this season. They both underwent some pretty intense stuff in s1 over 4 years prior and thought that would be it, that the worst time of their lives was over. So, of course, woojin, who had sustained some pretty major injuries back then, would have retired from the ring and taken on a coaching role for gunwoo, who, in turn, is training solely to fight in the ring. His close call with death would have, of course, made woojin a lot more mature and less goofy, especially as he is battling with some heavy internalised insecurities about his strength and ability to protect his new family.

This season's events completely upturn their comfortable lives and give each of them a tough reminder. For woojin, its that if he wants to be a reliable hyung and protect his ride or die lil bro and second mother, he needs to get stronger ASAP! i guarantee he will be a beast in the next season. And for gunwoo, he realises he needs to stop conflicting with his morals and fight dirty when necessary to stop any more of his loved ones getting hurt.

This first season provides such good insight on detective work in the 90s before the integration of technology we all rely on today. Just good ol fashioned detective work with pen n paper. It's a real delight to watch them work using classic police procedural.

The team's dynamic was fantastic and though I'm sad to see members leaving and new ones joining at the end, I like the realism it adds. It just makes sense for people to be constantly transferred in and out of such grim, mentally draining work.

I cannot offer you great wealth or Italy but I can offer you my love, and my devotion, and my hope to build a family one day.

The characterisation of Mary absolutely shines above everything else. She was quirky, charming, and so damn real, especially when addressing her insecurities. I just loved how she was written, she truly was the highlight!

I just really did not like how 'disney-fied' Thia's character was...I get that her peppy cheery attitude is supposed to contrast Dek's moodiness but oh man was it annoying at times

its a gritty and unsettling crime thriller where every single character, except for the child, is a scumbag in their own right. they all take advantage of the situation for their own personal agenda, inadvertently messing up the investigation

the characters are all frustrating and unlikeable, and their environment is full of death and decay, enhancing the film's overall grittiness and realism

the movie hits the hardest as soon as the credits start rolling simply because you realise if the adults hadnt been caught up in a whirwind of their egos, insecurities, selfishness and greed, they could have prevented such a tragedy

i enjoyed all the references, jokes and spoofs on the cop/detective/noir tropes, as well as all the dunking on tech billionaires, but wasnt too much of a fan of some other jokes, which landed a bit dry imo

pamela was great tho!! love seeing her expand her filmography and hope she continues to do so!

its not subtle at all with its harsh critique on women's beauty standards, and the pain and suffering we go through just to become 'high-value' in the lecherous eyes of patriarchy - as if we exist just to be used, modified and discarded according to society's tastes

i liked seeing the story play out in the stepsister's perspective, with 'cinderella' as the adversary, especially since they are both a victim to their circumstance, and are only in competition to escape debt or a life of servitude

whenever we think of the holocaust and europe during ww2, we always think along the lines of, "how did society let that happen? how were they ok with it?", and the film answers that perfectly - through complete moral apathy and extreme dehumanisation

the family live their idyllic lives and enjoy it, while we, as the audience, watch on in horror as smoke constantly rises from the chimney over the wall, and its horrific meaning

it encapsulates how things led up to this point in europe at the time, with people actively committing the crimes (the husband), while others simply ignored it for their own convenience, even enjoying the 'benefits' (the wife)

i still think more could have been done in showing the stark contrast of the family's peaceful life and the atrocity next door - overalll not a great movie, but a very important one nonetheless
