i just love all the stories about production on project hail mary. they didn't use a single green/blue screen in the whole film. they built the whole interior of the hail mary. the petrova line scene was done practically by putting infrared lights on a chicken wire cage. rocky's voice was one of the puppeteers because he did such a good job during filming that they couldn't imagine anyone else voicing him. and rocky was a practical puppet/animatronic! sandra huller picked sign of the times as her karaoke song and she asked her daughter if it was still a cool song. i just feel like there was so much love making this film and im obsessed

i always think about that study where they had adults hold a baby, and when they were told the baby was a girl the adults said she was cute and small, and when they were told the baby was a boy they said he was big and strong. they rated the baby’s ability to do things and tendency towards certain toys differently. they even held the baby differently. (x) or when they rated the baby’s physical ability to do various tasks such as climbing up a slope differently, (x) & when they measured how much parents told their girl children vs. their boy children to be careful and stop being so rowdy (x), & when they measured how often girls and boys were told to be quiet. (x) this was, obviously, all unconscious behavior in the adults. they’re not all like, raving sexists who outspokenly believe that women can’t do stuff or that girls really should just be quieter, be more still than boys. like its not even counting the direct, actual messages, its just literally how every single person in your entire life treats you, and if asked they would probably deny that its even because you’re a girl. how the fuck am i supposed to believe this doesn’t affect a child’s development when its literally constant throughout the entire process

Reblogging to second that book recommendation. Delusions of Gender covers a lot of scientific studies into perceived gender differences in children and adults - things like the study of children climbing a slope reference by OP, but also things like men being better at spacial reasoning than women. It asks the question of whether these differences are innate and natural or taught to us by society from a young age. From the title, I think you can guess where the author landed on this question.

I love this for the creativity and the joy in the post. How perfectly these bits of rocks and shells show us two ladies frolicking in delight! At the beach, one might assume. They're having a great time. Good for them.

There was a bit in Wake Up Dead Man where the wannabe politician complains that he campaigned about All The Hot And Divisive Topics (all of them!) and is like "but the voters wouldnt go for it :( Idk why." and the priest he's talking to says something like "maybe you should narrow your focus. Connect with people, you know? On a more personal level." and the wannabe politician stares at him kinda blanky and then says something like, "what, like, find out what theyre scared of and then weaponise it to make them vote for me?" And when I say I laughed out loud at that, I mean that I think i made the whole cinema jump in their seats from the laugh that burst out of me

Okay but on a more serious note, I can’t get over the symbolism of the central cross through the new knives out movie. Under Monsignor Wicks, it’s missing, leaving only its shadow as a reminder of what’s supposed to be there. All of his sermons are meant to radicalize his supporters further and build up his own power and his own ego, not Christ, not the mission of the church. It’s meant to be a permanent monument of his hatred and disgust for his mother. The most common reminder of Christ’s teachings on love, service, and self-sacrifice were literally physically absent. When Jud takes over, the crucifix is rebuilt and placed back up front and center as a testament to the fact that his mission and sermons are focused on his faith, grace, and being of service to his community, not the power that he could wield. Such good visual/environmental storytelling my god.
