Thank you all so much for entertaining my whims and giving me so much data to analyze! In addition to your responses to my poll, I spent some time browsing JJK content online and taking note of the self-declared sexualities of individuals who post about Gojo and/or Geto. 

I got really into the analysis, and there are over 1,300 words of me discussing my findings. So, to save you all some time, there is a tldr at the end! I'd love to hear your thoughts about anything and everything in the comments. Thanks again :3

Introduction:

My study aimed to determine if bisexuals have a relationship with Suguru Geto that is similar to the relationship I perceive lesbians have with Satoru Gojo. 

The defining points of the aforementioned relationship include:

Gojo or Geto is in a given individual's top three fictional crushes

Gojo or Geto is thought about often by the individual, and in many different contexts

Gojo or Geto is relatable to the individual

I utilized a Tumblr poll and did research on other social media platforms (Tiktok and Twitter) to get data. My poll responses stalled around day four, but I was able to find many posts online that furthered my understanding of the topic. 

Over the course of the past week, I realized two things:

One, my choice to include “heterosexual Gojo/Geto lover” as options in my poll was entirely unnecessary. Less than 30 minutes after I posted the poll, I started to feel weird about having “heterosexual,” and then just the general umbrella of “different sexuality,” especially because I wasn't collecting data on heterosexuals. So yeah, I’m sorry about that! I have no idea why I did that! I ended up combining those two categories when analyzing my data, considering the goal of my query. (It was interesting to see the ratio of straight to queer people that participated, though.)

Two, there is a major problem with my original question, which is that bisexuals can be attracted to men, and lesbians cannot. It is impossible for a bisexual person who experiences attraction to men to have the same connection to a fictional man that a lesbian does. I decided to continue my research for fun, but the answer to my original question is no, because it can't be anything else. (Oops!)

Basic analysis of the data:

Poll:

The most selected answer was “bisexual geto lover” (44 out of 116)

The least selected answer was “lesbian gojo lover” (5 out of 116)

Most participants are bisexual (68 out of 116)

The least amount of participants are lesbian (12 out of 116)

More participants selected Geto over Gojo 

Social Media:

I found very few self-disclosed lesbians with public posts and comments depicting Gojo or Geto

Gojo and Geto are popular subjects in animanga spaces online, and most posters don’t have a clear favorite or information about their sexualities shared publicly

Many people with queer gender identities like Geto (AN: real shit!!!!)

Queer people who may or may not identify as lesbians seem to agree that Gojo supports the lesbian community (whether or not this has anything to do with his haircut in the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death arc, I do not know)

Yuri Gego appeals to queer individuals (AN: REAL SHITTTTT)

Where responses to my poll would indicate a general preference for Geto over Gojo, searches on other platforms yielded the opposite results

Interpretation of the data:

Ok, so, bisexuals definitely love Geto! I was only a little bit surprised that Geto seems to be favored over Gojo. I was not at all surprised at the ratio of bisexual to lesbian people that responded, given that there are fewer lesbians than bisexual people. 

The least selected answer being “lesbian gojo lover” checks out when contextualized, but two less people selected this answer than “lesbian geto lover.” When I thought more about it, I wasn’t surprised by that either. It just makes sense to me, I don’t know how to explain it. Something about his beautiful hair and mental illness.

I connected my observations to possible reasons, just for fun. I don’t have a lot of data to back these up, it’s largely generalized personal thoughts.

Many lesbians love fictional men, Gojo included (Chuuya also comes to mind). There is another kind of relationship I noticed that lesbians have with fictional men, that is more akin to “that’s my son” than “i lowk have a crush.” I’m curious as to why Gojo is thought of so commonly in both ways, so I'd appreciate insight from any lesbians who have thoughts on the matter.

As for bisexual Geto fans, I’d reason that most are attracted to him for the same reason that lesbians find him attractive (beautiful hair, mental illness, etc.). I can point to characters such as L from Death Note, Abbacchio from JJBA, and Illumi (and Kurapika and Chrollo) from HXH to support this notion.

Queer people like men who are queer/perceived to be queer. All of the popular animanga men in the online spaces I frequent are being shipped with other men.

I’m thinking that queer people just love both Gojo and Geto. You'd be hard-pressed to find a queer JJK fan who doesn't ship satosugu

Acknowledgement of constraints:

First of all, there are fewer lesbians than there are bisexuals, even when you exclude bisexuals with a masculine gender identity. That limited the amount of data I was able to collect from lesbians, and skewed my data in favor of bisexuals. 

^^ This also influenced the data I collected in the field (the internet). There are a lot of queer animanga fans, but the specific identities of those queer fans likely correlate with their presence in the general population. So, of course, I found more bisexuals who love Gojo/Geto than lesbians. I’d bet every social media platform, excluding tumblr, has more heterosexual users than queer ones.

^^ The study linked here is unrelated to my original query, but I came across it while I was searching for sexuality demographics of social media users, and it’s kind of interesting, so I thought I would share it

Second, the "other" category is definitely too broad. My intended subjects were feminine people who identify as lesbian or bisexual, and have a preference for Gojo or Geto

Also, I had difficulties trying to find the sexuality demographics of Tumblr users, which was expected. I was curious to see how it compared to my poll responses. I would also be interested in seeing the sexuality demographics of JJK viewers/readers.

If I were to redo this study, I might;

Find a way to inquire about why participants chose their responses, as in why they chose Gojo over Geto or vice versa

Reach out to lesbian and bisexual JJK fans and ask them directly. That way, I could hear from an equal number of both and collect data that would help me answer my original question better.

Specify who my intended subjects are. It was interesting to have the other response options, but not necessary for my purposes

Conclusions:

Bisexuals are not to Suguru Geto as lesbians are to Satoru Gojo!!! People of all sexualities like these characters for a wide variety of reasons. I find the unique connection lesbians have to fictional men very interesting, and would really like to understand more about it. I love queer conversation and Jujutsu Kaisen, and I especially love queer conversations that feature Jujutsu Kaisen. 

Anyway, I had a lot of fun doing this!! Thank you all again for participating!! I hope I satisfied more than just my own curiosity. 

In regards to one of the points in my "acknowledgement of constraints," if you would like to comment with what option from the poll you selected and why, that would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR BELOW

initial observations:

1. lesbians have a connection to satoru gojo that i find very interesting. gojo is often at the top of the list when lesbians discuss attraction to fictional males. many lesbians cosplay him and have collections of gojo merchandise. i do not see lesbians engage with geto similarly.

2. i am bisexual, and i love geto the way lesbians love gojo. based on vibes alone, the majority of geto lovers that i see online are bisexual. << this particular phenomenon could be due to my algorithms. there may very well be a larger population of straight or lesbian geto lovers.

hypothesis: bisexuals are to suguru geto, as lesbians are to satoru gojo

^^ this part always confused me bc Kenjaku is literally evil and doesn't give a gaf abt Yuji. i feel kind of dumb for not realizing this sooner: but Kenjaku wasn't demonstrating a rare moment of kindness or care for his child, he was thanking Sasaki for leading Yuji to Sukuna's finger!!!

Kenjaku planned for Yuji to become Sukuna's vessel (to fulfill his binding vow w/Sukuna in exchange for his cooperation w/the culling game), and if Yuji hadn't joined the occult club and become friends with those two, then he never would have felt the need to save them or even known about the finger. Kenjaku would have had to get Yuji to eat the finger another way, had Sasaki and Iguchi not unintentionally aided him.

also, do we remember Megumi asking (i believe it was in episode one of the anime, but i don't recall this being in the manga) why they'd keep such a strong cursed object as a ward for a middle school, and in such an obvious place no less? i don't think this was explicitly confirmed, but that had to be Kenjaku's doing, too.
