Their nose brush against one other. Goosebumps rise on Keith’s skin despite the heat. Lance’s breath almost brings relieving cold air across the sweat beading on his face. “What are you doing?” Keith manages to mutter, his body slowly boiling in the heat. Lance’s proximity isn’t helping. Despite the imminent danger, Keith’s mind flashes back to last night. To last night, and to countless galas before that, where he’d seen Lance closing in on a beautiful alien – Lance hadn’t even been opposed to non-humanoids, but he’d always preferred curves and soft edges, blushing cheeks, plush lips, dazzling smiles, and long hair. “What do you think?” Lance snaps.

chapter 2 summary

The door closes, and the Prince’s face falls as he turns to look at Keith. His eyes, once again, catch on the scar across his cheek, and Keith feels like he got caught committing a crime. Like a child with their hand in the jar of sweets. He mustn’t be having these sorts of thoughts.  With the corners of his mouth pulling his lips into a tight line, the Prince says, “Eyes ahead, knight.” There isn’t a trace of warmth in those words. It’s simply a command. And Keith has no choice but to obey, no matter how much every bit of his body screams at him to do anything but.
