on the one hand i probably shouldn't have to be doing damage control/social aftercare every time i decide to be comically overdramatic about my frustration with ultimately trivial issues, but on the other i strongly believe in the necessity of communication as a tool for coexisting with other people, so i'd be a hypocrite if i didn't attempt to communicate my intent more clearly for those who feel persecuted by it. without getting too personal about it, i've got a pretty miserable history of any outward expression of individual personhood, regardless of how benign, being used as an excuse to abuse me (and even if i didn't, don't you think i've ever felt badly about anything before? i'm human!). i know intimately and have to reckon with the long-term impact of the kind of insecurity that develops in response to that, and i know that my condition isn't, unfortunately, unique, and that a great deal of conduct in online spaces tends towards encouraging and rewarding thoughtlessly cruel hostility, which reinforces the fear of repeat experiences of some of the most wretched you've ever been made to feel. i've also had to do the hard and ongoing work of learning not to let that insecurity rule my life and limit me to being small and helpless and desperate not to take up space, even as my need for comfort is inflamed to the point of trampling and inconveniencing everyone around me. so it's important to me to let people know that they don't need to live like that either. i'm not standing in your way, and if you try to throw yourself at my feet to justify yourself to me i'm going to bluntly tell you to get up and keep moving. you don't need my approval, and you're not going to get it. i'm not gonna kick you while you're down with my big steel-toed boots; i'm just not into you like that i'm afraid. you don't need me. you're free.
